MACLEA – Introduction to Patrol 25 March 2013 Introduction to Patrol One of the duties you will face while being a peace officer is patrolling the streets. Most citizens believe that this duty just consists of driving a city car around for the duration of you ship. While on some days your shift may consist mainly of patrolling the streets of your county, municipality, etc., this can also prove to be a very difficult duty. Not only are you patrolling the streets, but you are constantly paying very close attention to all people and/or things around you. This is called attention to detail. Attention to detail is a huge part of your patrol. This is the idea that you are very aware of your surroundings and are even more aware of what exactly is going on around you at all times. By finessing and effectively raising your level of attention to the details around you, you will make your days of patrolling both more effective, and also much safer for both you and your communities. There are certain measures one must take to make sure that he is properly equipped and ready for your patrol. The first and foremost task is to make sure your uniform is ironed and looks proper. Peace officers that have their uniform ironed and wrinkle free are more likely to receive cooperation and compliance from a citizen on a traffic stop or just a one on one citizen contact to see if they have noticed anything out of the ordinary. An officer that has a uniform on that has wrinkles in it, stains on it, etc., will receive less compliance because the citizens may think that they are just in this profession to have a position of authority or to be a bother just because they can. The second is to make sure all of your duty gear (belt, gun, cuffs, etc.) are all cleaned and properly maintained.
