Case Study Robert Barton Daniel M.Dolohery CJA/474 September 4, 2014 Gregory Frum Concepts Related to Groups and Group Dynamics Explain What Happened in This Situation Graduating from the academy and joining forces with the group was not an easy task for Officer Baron. On the frontline Officer Barton did not fit very well from the beginning possibly due to his background coming from a small town. Officer Barton was also fluent in three different languages being that in his family at home spoke English, French and Spanish. Joining the group he realized he was part of a subculture that shared values, perspectives, and Attitudes. It was not long only after three years of service, Officer Baton was reassigned to the Joint Gang Task Force. Officer Barton knew he wanted to be a member of this group as this group shared unique values, and beliefs that related to the job. However, Officer Barton had no clue as to the new subculture he was about to enter into. Officer Barton wanted to be within this tight knit band of brothers. (More, 2012). When Does Group Cohesiveness Cease to be Positive and Become Pathological Group Cohesiveness is a bond between the officers as in a group meaning officers stick together. When groups are cohesive they have better communication. Having group cohesiveness amongst fellow officers is deter mental when on duty, it provides that safety and security net much needed by law enforcement personnel. Satisfaction plays a role in cohesive whereas the groups will stay together, and having that open communication with their peers. Group cohesive means that groups attempting goals become more successful and or positive outcomes. (Group Cohesiveness, n.d.) If subcultures did not exist we could not rely on our fellow personnel. People categorize themselves on a daily basis and are just not aware that they just put a label on themselves. The responses police officers adhere to daily many are without cause such as lesbians, bikers, gothic culture, and skin heads to name a few (Subculture List, 2012). Subcultures exist in almost all places schools, work environments and public places. Police officers must always prepare themselves for the worst case scenario in an emergency call. Officers who believe a call is just a simple matter are not prepared that puts themselves at risk in addition to the public at any given time. In this instance the subculture here is to protect and serve. What Steps Might You Take as a Police Administrator to Prevent This From Occurring It can be difficult to prevent subcultures from developing in your jurisdiction. Possibly to recognize and identify the groups that can develop and maintain a diverse staff to prevent subcultures. We are a diverse nation and at times without knowing a certain group of people
