Interview of a Health Care Leader
Leadership by definition is simply a way of one influencing individuals or groups to attain specific goals and can be learned if one chooses to do so (Sullivan & Decker, 2009). Good nursing leaders are able to empower others and to influence outcomes in many given situations. A leader is anyone who has the ability to influence or motivate others to accomplish a task whereas a manager is “an individual employed by an organization is responsible for efficiently accomplishing the goals of the organization” (Sullivan & Decker, 2009, p. 330). Below is the summary of the interview I have done with my nurse manager. I have written down exactly what she replied to my questions. During our meeting, the first question I asked was, “Could you speak a bit about your background and the role you have today?” The response to my question regarding background and role she have today, was that she have "grown up" as a Nurse Tech with this same hospital and at present is the Clinical Nurse Manager. As an assistant nurse manager (ANM), she stated that, “I have attended the 200 and 300 series of leadership development classes offered by the hospital (over 120 hours of education).”
An effective leader knows his or her strength and weakness and therefore it makes it easier for them to delegate appropriately. A nurse leader or any leader devotes his or her time to develop individual skills for staff and to deal with any issues within the unit. By doing this an effective leader is able to form teams who are responsible for various duties. “If a leader is able to motivate staff members personally, staff members' duties will be carried out more effectively” (Sullivan & Decker, 2009).
