Q4 Professionalism can be defined as a person who has the spirit or characteristic of a professional. Whereby a professional can be define as a person belonging to a group of people with the same profession, which has the standard of education and training that prepares members of the profession with particular knowledge and skill necessary to perform the role of that profession. They are bound and subject to a strict codes of conduct to uphold ethical and moral obligation. The rules and regulation of the IEM is to be used only as guideline for the engineer to obtain professionalism. True professionalism can only be obtained by the engineer only when he can implement the rules and regulation into his day to day conduct. To the statement that professionalism cannot be thought by regurgitating the IEM regulation on professional conduct nor by memorizing a set of rule. I personally agree with the statement. Professionalism is not the act of memorizing the code of ethic but it is more than that. As per definition above, professionalism is a state of mind on which a person thinking and character reflect their commitment to the code which he adheres to. In this case the code of ethic of the professional engineer. Most of the time this character and thinking comes naturally and is carried out subconsciously. For this reason, by merely memorizing the code will not get the person to become a professional, as he won’t be able to spiritually adopt the way of thinking of a professional. But to get to the point in becoming a professional, the person must first get himself to know and learn the regulation on professional conduct and the set of rules governing it. This must be exposed to the young engineers during their formative years in order for them to naturally adopt the rules and regulation and for them to stick to it religiously throughout their professional career.
