The article was published in the Harvard Business Review in the January-February 2011 issue, and it is entitled:”Are you a good boss or a great one?”. Main Ideas The authors, Linda Hill and Kent Lineback, have observed common problems with ineffective boss that can be overcome if the leader can master three essential behaviours, and challenge his performance regularly. Why leaders are often ineffective. First of all, the authors have identified the reasons why most of the leaders are often overwhelmed by their tasks. They have observed that most of the managers stop doing efforts because they stop questioning themselves about how they are doing. More importantly, they don’t know what to do to improve their efficiency. Consequently, managers have to understand what it takes to develop their talent. Being a brilliant boss is all base on personal experiences, so it’s a long process. Moreover, a leader should always keep in mind what are his objectives, and the way to reach them is by his influencing potential because “management is defined by responsibility but done by exerting influence”. Three imperatives. There are three essential behaviours to be a great boss. Accepting that, a leader should be able to manage himself, his network and finally his team. Managing himself means having a good attitude. The manager’s personality and thoughts are crucial because they will have a direct influence on their people’s behaviours.
