How would you perform the role of Katherine in Shakespeare’s “The taming of the Shrew” from page 159 to the end, Act 5 Scene 2, in order to fulfil your aims? Before I start talking about how I would perform the role of Katherine I need to establish a clear aim in the scene so that I can perform the role accordingly. As this is the end of the play I would like for this scene to really tie up the whole play and give an audience a satisfying ending which portrays the idea that Katherine really has changed and finally lets it all out with her speech. Therefore I want Katherine to still be a little feisty but nowhere near in an unpleasant way like we have seen previously in the play. That being said at the beginning of the scene I would come on stage with the other characters with a relaxed posture and a smile on my face indicating to the audience that this is the “new Katherine”. A more gentle and approachable Katherine who has been tamed by Petruchio. When Petruchio says “Off with that bauble – throw it underfoot!” I would with a big smile on my face obey the instruction and almost enjoy it as I’m doing it. Again to symbolise to the audience that Katherine has changed. She has changed a lot since the beginning of the play. Keeping a smile on my face throughout this scene is quite important. It shows to the audience that Katherine, now tamed is really happy. She can truly enjoy life and it’s brilliance to the fullest now that she has someone who really has shown her love and care and she has learned to show those feelings back. When Petruchio says the line “What duty they do owe their lords and husbands” I would want the other female characters to gasp in shock at what Petruchio said but as Katherine I would not gasp and rather ponder for a moment putting my hand up to my face to clearly show that the character is honestly thinking about this.
