In the book What Great Teachers Do Differently, Todd Whitaker chronicles things that great teachers do. By adopting many of the practices in the book, a new teacher can be well on their way to becoming a great teacher. High expectations, creating a climate of caring, decision making, and learning to ignore things are just a few of the things that great teachers do. Great teachers have high expectations not just for their students, but also for themselves. The expectations a teacher places on his or herself are directly related to those placed on their students.
First and most important, AP courses provide students the opportunity to excel in a challenging class. Through these courses, the students learn to study in ways that allow them to be prepared for future courses that in college. Rather than normal high school courses, AP classes are exceedingly challenging and require the students to put full effort into the work. AP English and literature teacher, Vicki Schmitt, states, “Even if you make a C in an AP class, there is value in having been in the class” (“Statistics show AP courses boost success”). Though there is much difficulty in the courses, it is more important to gather the information learned in the course and learn strong techniques for work ethic.
The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice. David Bartholomae, author of Inventing the University, is a professor who writes about the struggles that students face with transitioning into college level writing and learning to write with authority in academic discourse, all while maintaining a unique voice. All along educational institutions had played an important role in providing all that skills that people will use in the future. At present time, there are many kinds of educational institutions like high school and college. Even though high school and college offer knowledge to students and prepare them for the future, there are some important differences between them that make them different kind of institutions. At first, grading is an important process which indicates the performance of a student, either this is in college or in high school, but in college there is a different way of grading from that of high school. For example, while in high school good homework grades are able to raise your overall grade if you did not do well on tests, in college the grades in tests and major papers (essays, projects, and researches) are the most important things that provide most of the course grade.
Though academic requirements and student life vary depending on the college you attend, there are basic differences that apply in almost every case. The main differences that students have acknowledged are self-discipline, teaching methods, and structure. The self-discipline required to be a successful college student is at a much higher level than the self-discipline of a high school student. Professors in college put in effort to instruct students as best they can. The realization is that it is up to the student to put in the work and have the desire to educate them-selves.
Grades are being used for this because grades can be used to get a rough preview of the person in question. Grades show the applicant’s ability to listen accurately, communicate clearly, follow instructions, and to return a product, answer or skill on request. It is the student’s willingness and ability to apply themselves to the task at hand that demonstrates their future value to employers in the marketplace. Prospective bosses see good grades in school as an indication of the student’s ability to provide desired results, which makes them highly marketable and in demand. Without grades, how else would we assess and measure a student’s abilities in a practical way that can be used for this?
Both play an important role in making a person into a talented individual and a member of a society. High school students know that there are differences between high school and college, but sometimes what they think is not how it is. High School can be considered as a continuation of elementary and middle school where students learn trigonometry, physics, American history, etc. By law, it is necessary and they are forced to attend High School. There are rules and regulations which students cannot break, because there will be punishments for their actions.
Differences and similarities between levels High School and college are alike in numerous ways, but they are also very different. They are both educational institutions which help people achieve greater intelligence but different in certain factors. High school is mandatory and free if you attend a public school, otherwise it will cost you while college is both voluntary and expensive. In high school, students are guided for responsibilities they have and students are corrected if they are out of line. Freedom is the main difference between high school and college but, classes, teachers, social aspects and costs are the major ways that college differs from high school.
Going to either traditional or online college is a big step in a student’s life, and teachers are there to help and guide them through any situations that arise. In a traditional school setting students are able to speak and interact with teachers, because they are present in the classroom. Students are able to ask questions about the class material or about help with homework if needed. The traditional setting students would get an immediate answer to the questions that they asked. In some cases students are able to understand course material and the hands on experience when they are face- face with the teacher.
