Omari Nebbitts English 101-06 Argument Essay Draft February 25, 2013 Unhealthy Foods Surrounding the Learning Intuitions of HBCUs African American students have been deceived by the blockade of unhealthy food restaurants surrounding the Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Young African Americans eat fast food around campus believing that it is the only way to satisfy hunger, thus, subjecting themselves to obesity-related illnesses. Students cannot eat healthier foods if all that surrounds them are burgers, fries, sodas, and sweets. Correcting this problem will take a joint effort between students and the school administration. Historically Black Colleges and Universities should provide healthier non-processed food options in and around their campuses; also, students must make an effort to change their eating habits from unhealthy to healthy. Restaurants should serve healthy or non-processed food around HBCU’s due to the area that many of these institutions are located in. If you live in an urban area, supermarkets that sell fresh produce and bigger selections of healthy food are far away and require you to have a car to transport groceries back to your home. According to a study published in the International Journal of Health Geographics, as more and more supermarkets leave cities to set up shop in the suburbs, urban areas are increasingly at risk of becoming “food deserts” (Apparicio, 2007). A “food desert” is a geographic area where grocery stores are unaccounted for. Most urban areas are surrounded by fast food restaurants simply because their target market, which are mostly low or middle class citizens, usually look for any opportunity to buy food that taste good, smells good, and is cheap to purchase.
