Health Problems Caused By New Media In today’s world, people are confronting with the consequences of the new innovations. As far as new media is concerned, there are various consequences for individuals. According to media theorist Marshall Mcluhan, the vast majority of people are disposed to focus on the obvious effects of new media and miss the structural and important changes in human affairs. McLuhan stress that for the message of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs. (McLuhan 1) It can not be doubted that there are significant changes that are introduced into our life by the new media, however, most of the people tend to ignore them. The health problems are one of the ultimate issues in assessing the consequences of the new media as new media effecting people both physically and psychologically. In the twentyfirst century, many people are suffering from the health problems stemmed from the new media devices. The major topics that this essay examines are physical and psychological health problems caused by new media such as obesity, overweight problems, obsessive/compulsive behaviours. The new media and technological devices become a significant part of the modern life and they bring physical inactivity with them. According to McLuhan’s definition of medium, a medium is any extension of ourselves.(McLuhan 1) To illustrate, a hammer extends our arm and the wheel extends our legs and feet. (Federman 1) Moreover, with automation, the new patterns of human association tend to eliminate jobs. (McLuhan 1) As a result, today’s people are making less effort on a daily basis than the people did in the past. Consequently, there is an increasing incidence of obesity in today’s world.
