DIP 1.3 TC 1.3 Inclusive practice is about attitudes and approaches taken to ensure that people are not isolated or excluded.
It means treating people as individuals, with different skills and abilities, without making judgment based on stereotypes. It is based on fair equal, and courteous opportunities to all individuals, it should include the principle of treating people with fairness. It should also create a way of life where people of all backgrounds can feel appreciated and valued, and should be well established in health and social care services. The word diverse means “varied and different” so “diversity” is about more than equality. It is about valuing variety and individual differences and creating a culture, environment and practices which respect and value differences for the benefit of society, organisations and individuals.
Equality focuses on those areas covered by the law, namely the key areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation, transgender and Age, which when it comes to promoting equality and Inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings is very important. People must not be unfairly discriminated against because of any of these factors and we must all contribute to creating a positive workplace and service delivery environment where discriminatory practices and discrimination no longer happen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Reflective Account 1 Hint: - - example how you promote equality? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What is Diversity? In understanding diversity it is important to understand is basis is about valuing individual difference.
Equality Equality is the treatment of everyone as equals no matter how diverse they are. This can include being treated as equals in the work, being given equal opportunities and receive the same rights as other people no matter their differences. Inclusion Inclusion is the right of being included in activities. It is commonly used by disability rights activists to promote the fact that just because people are disabled it doesn't mean that they can't do things that able-bodied people can do. Discrimination Discrimination is the act of treating someone as a equal because they are different from other people, wether it is that they are a different race, religion or that they are disabled 1.2 Describe ways in which discrimination may deliberately or inadvertently occur in the work setting In the work place people can discriminate by making racist/sexist comments about individuals.
Valuing people as individuals is important in promoting equality of opportunities. Inclusion is ensuring that people have access to available services and activities as well as a full range of services and facilities available Discrimination is judging people because of gender, social class, age, disability, religion, sexuality, race, ethnicity, language, nationality or other personal characteristics and discriminating against then because of these differentness, treating them different, different treatment of care. 1.2 The potential effects of discrimination can be different for different people. The effects can be physical, emotional or a combination of both such as Disempowerment, Low self-esteem and self-identity and even negative behaviours including aggression and criminality., poor appetite, a change in eating habits, sleeplessness, loss/gain of weight, lack of personal hygiene and lack of energy. the emotional effects may be low self esteem, lack of confidence, feeling unwanted, insecurity, becoming withdrawn, depression/stress, anxiety, sudden change in behaviour.
Diversity recognises that though people have things common with each other, they are also different and unique in many ways. Diversity is about recognising and valuing those differences. “Sometimes you may have to care for clients whose values are different to yours, but you must make sure that you still care for them in a fair way, and that they can express their values without fear of discrimination.” EQUALITY: is the vision of creating society where power and quality of life is shared equally and both individuals and communities are able to live their lives free from discrimination and oppression experienced by certain groups. INCLUSION: its position where someone or various groups can access and benefit from the full range of opportunities available to members of society. Social inclusion is generally seen as a description of activities aimed at removing barriers such as discrimination, isolation, poverty and fear to enable individuals and communities to fully participate in civil society.
Equality is about everyone being treated fairly, however it does not mean we treat everyone the same. It is about celebrating diversity and ensuring that no one is discriminated against because of their differences, giving everyone equal opportunities. To discriminate is to use someone's differences as a disadvantage to them, for example, failing to install wheelchair ramps in the workplace making it difficult for anyone in a wheelchair to enter the building. Equality is about removing these barriers and eliminating discrimination. Inclusion is the practice of eliminating discrimination and removing the barriers that may be hindering people, helping them access equal opportunities and fair treatment.
Diversity Diversity refers to the unique differences in our society, between individuals and how individuals choose to live their lives. Each person is a unique individual and diversity recognises these differences, whether its differences because of race, gender, sexual orientation, beliefs, background, physical appearance, family structure or disability. Diversity isn't just between two groups of people, but also between the individuals in the group..By recognising and understanding our individual differences and accepting them we can create a productive environment in which everybody feels valued. Equality Equality means provision of equal access to opportunities and having the same rights as others.Equality is ensuring that individuals have equal opportunities in order to make the most of their talents and lives. Equality is about no one having less opportunity or choice because of their beliefs, gender, race, sexuality orientation, background, family structure or disability.
By valuing the variety and individual differences we can create a culture, environment and practises that respect and celebrate these for the benefit of society, organisations and individual. Equality: Equality is the current term for “Equal Opportunities”. It is based on the legal obligation to comply with anti-discrimination legislation. Equality protects people from being discriminated against It is about fostering and adopting the right to be different, to be free from discrimination and to have choice and dignity. Equality allows us to be valued as an individual with a right to our own beliefs and values.
It places emphasis on members of various social groups, which might have at some time suffered from discrimination. Social groupings generally emphasized in such a way are those delineated by aspects of gender, race or religion. Equal opportunity is therefore primarily about compliance with discrimination legislation, accompanied by positive or affirmative action aimed at challenging and removing prejudice and stereotyping. In practice, equal opportunity is said to exist when “people with similar abilities reach similar results after doing the same amount of work”. No one really knows who originated the concept of managing diversity, but it is based on the premise that people should be valued as individuals for reasons related to business interests, as well as for moral and social reasons.
