Goddard Space Flight Centre Case Study Analysis Knowledge management is becoming a key resource in the information technology era and can be seen as a sustainable competitive advantage. Many organisations are realising this and transforming their information systems and knowledge sharing processes because of it. The Goddard Space Flight Centre is no different as is evident in this case study as they describe some of their current issues and problems in their progression towards becoming a learning organisation. We have highlighted five problems that are holding the organisation back at this stage and suggested some recommendations and strategies to implement these changes. Problem 1: Funding Problem Identification One of the main problems of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in order to achieve long term effectiveness was the issue of lack of funding and funding not to be used for knowledge management and just by project managers. Implementing knowledge management effectively is very costly and after the Columbia tragedy there was increasing pressures to cut taxpayers money towards NASA. “Taxpayers supply bout 2.5 to 3 billion dollars associated with specific mission related activities and we fund the institution through those” (Yemen, G. and Clawson, J. G. 2004, pg 8). It is hard to break the funding from mission specific and contribute some of the funding towards knowledge management activities. As Goddard was a “project-centric organisation” there was tough competition for funding. As “Resources became scarcer and competition between NASA agencies to get a slice of the funding increased” (Yemen, G. and Clawson, J. G. 2004, pg 4). This was a problem as to impose effective knowledge management, time and money was necessary. Problem Analysis Funding is an important issue as without the financial backing, knowledge management could not be
