Jacky Sosa 2nd Block Darfur Genocide: Final Draft One million, one million living and breathing people like us, who are a part of this magnificent world, are tragically enduring the most horrendous, heart-breaking, and sadly, too familiar term people, just like us could ever imagine. Genocide, the systematic extermination of a national, ethnical, racial, or religiously group of people. The unfortunate victim this time? Darfur in West Sudan, Africa. "In recent years, the people of Darfur have been systematically attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy-militia controlled by them as well.
An example is in the Rwandan Genocide in which 800,000 Tutis were killed by Rwandan extremists. The Hutu controlled the radio stations which encouraged them to kill the Tutis “cockroaches”. The group were dehumanised in which their members were seen as worthless and not worthy of moral consideration. The last idea is that of situational variables. ZImbardo argues that the powerful influence on situation can have on people’s
Throughout history we have seen many tyrants create and even maintain conflict just to further their own ends, resulting in the loss of many innocent lives. The likes of Muammar Gaddafi, Joseph Kony, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler. These self-obsessed leaders have only come to power by being corrupt and creating conflict causing thousands of innocent people to suffer, they have used their high authority to steal land, money and even force their religious views/options. Roughly 66,000 innocent children have been abducted and made to kill their parents by Kony; 20,000 people were killed during Gaddafi’s reign; 300,000 people were murdered by Benito Mussolini and 7 million were executed or worked to death by Hitler. In total, at least 7386,000 people were murdered all because tyrannical, self-obsessed leaders wanted to further their own ends.
Page |1 Daniel Castracion Soc 100 tues-thurs Hotel Rwanda Between April and June 1994 a war between the Hutus and Tutsis occurred in the East African country of Rwanda. An estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the span of 100 days. I will discuss the basic scenario of the movie, how social theories may have influence particular outcomes and how dehumanization of the Tutsi people may have led to the acceptance of the genocide. This horrific event was not merely an act of one denomination simply not liking the other. Colonial history, global economic integration and finally the assassination president Habyarimana was the perfect combination for the tragic genocide of the Tutsi people of Rwanda.
In both nations, genocide was occurring between two ethnic races. In Darfur, Muslim Arab Sudanese were killing Muslim black Sudanese. In Rwanda, the Hutus were excluding and killing the Tutsis. In both situations, a group of extremists was doing all the slaughtering. The Interamwhe and the Janjaweed were responsible for the attacks, burnings, killing of men and children, and rape between the women.
Most of the deaths were Tutsis and most of those who were involved in the violence were Hutus. The genocide was sparked by the death of the Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali (which is the capital of Rwanda) airport on 6 April 1994. It was only c couple of hours after the assignation of the president Juvenal Habyarimana violence spread across the capital and then the country and it took several months before the violence was ceased. Before the murder of the president there was already conflict between the Tuties and the Hutu’s since the country was
The Rwandan Genocide of 1994 witnessed the horrifying genocide of 800,000 (Diep.2007:6) people and left a country devastated by mass famine and atrocious acts of war, such as torture and rape. The ensuing outcry of “never again” (Diep.2007:6) from the international community however, appears to have been nothing but moral lip service as global society has yet again lain as insidious witness to a similar conflict that emerged within Darfur in 2003. Similarity exists between the Rwandan and Darfur conflict in that both sets of conflicts have taken place as struggles over power and resources between ethnic tribes and dominant elites. Though the major similarity of these conflicts is the relatively slow and at times indifferent response of the
The deep rooted hatred between Hutus and Tutsis began with status within a monarchy. Tutsis generally were “kings” or “nobles”, while Hutus took on the surf like roll, as they were the majority. When Belgium gained control of Rwanda in 1919 after the Treaty of Versailles, they furthered the tension between the classes by issuing racial identification cards, giving preference to Tutsis in positions of education, politics, and business. From April 6, 1994 through mid July 1994 roughly one million civilians were massacred as a result of the Rwandan civil war between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Hutu extremists slaughtered Tutsis and any Hutus that stood in the way.
Having figured this out the United Nations sent The United Nations Commission of Inquiry to investigate (More). Sudan band aid for areas were he was located to protect Bashir (Genocide in Darfur United). The myriad tragedies have disrupted this country greatly. Through out the time of fighting, the people of Sudan are being hurt greatly and the genocide has affected millions of innocent civilians. Since 2003 there has been death of at least
This event caused thousands of Tutsis to migrate to Uganda because of rise of Hutu violence against Tutsi. Around 1990, Tutsi exiles know as the Rwandan Patriotic Front(RPF), attempted to invade Rwanda. The invasion is thwarted by the Rwandan army with the help of French and Belgium troops. The attempted invasion caused a civil war between the two ethnic groups for 3 to 4 year. During the civil war, Rwanda’s main export coffee goes through a recession
