Research, Statistics and Psychology Eric Ransome January 13, 2014 PSY/315 Racheal Reavy Research, Statistics and Psychology Research Statistics is one method that researchers use to tells the story of studies begin conducted. Research is the pursuit of knowledge, in the field of psychology statistics is used to understand the data collected from research. In psychology, research has a major role and it is statistics that helps to explain the information collected from research. The experimental or scientific study which gathers information on a subject is how research is defined. In psychology there are two essential elements in understanding theories and human behavior that is research and statistics, and how do we make sense of this information and the data collected.
Picking your topic For this project, you may choose to do an experiment, a correlation study, or case study experiment answering any question related to psychology. You must collect your data using either a survey or naturalistic observation and your method must meet the ethical criteria set by the IRB (me). What you will turn in You will turn in a scientific paper describing your study. The paper should include the following: Title (Person 1)– Scientific titles are descriptive and may be long. It doesn’t need to be clever or catchy (but it can be).
Structuralism was developed by a man named Edward Titchener who was a student of Wilhem Wundt. Titchener was extremely interested in learning about the structure of the consciousness. He believed in the use of experimentation for the science of psychology (Kowalski & Westen, 2009). The second school of thought, functionalism, along with structuralism was the two schools of thought which were dominant in the beginning of psychology (Kowalski & Westen, 2009). Functionalism studied the psychological processes which enable individuals to be able to adapt to their environments; each psychological process has an important role which is their main point of focus.
A case study is an in depth investigation of an individual or a small group. To learn about the people who are being studied, researchers may observe or speak with them, interview others who knew about them, and find out more about their backgrounds and personal histories. ii. How do psychologists use them Psychologists use what they learn in a case study to generalize broader principles that apply to the larger population. c. Naturalistic Observation i.
Fundamentals of Research Methodology PSYCH/540 July 29, 2013 Dr. Kimberly Wilkins Abstract The content of this paper will discuss a field of concepts pertaining to fundamental research in methodology, and provide a discussion in the important factors concerning the psychology of science research. The contents of this paper will contain an explanation and definition of scientific method along the method steps. A discussion in this paper will cover qualitative and quantitative data, and the testing, and construction of the scientific construct theory. Fundamentals of Research Methodology The science of behavior, and the mind is known as psychology and variables factors of the effects of behavior and mind from internal and external
Social Psychology Definition Paper Jessica Garcia PSY/400 Social Psychology October 28, 2013 Christine Hander Social Psychology Definition Paper Psychology is the scientific study of behavior, both human and animal behavior, with special interest in mental events involved in learning, thinking, and memory just to name a few (Psychology, 2006). Psychology consists of many subfields with a base of different schools of thought. To make these subfields science there are a few key ingredients needed; theory, research, and results. Each field has special interest on understanding,
Social psychologists not only complete research in a laboratory setting, but also try to complete experiments in real world settings, through surveys and other research methods, as some people may not act the same in a controlled setting as he or she do in an uncontrolled. Conclusion Social psychology is an important discipline in psychology. This study helps to take psychology from just focusing on the internal cognitions that an individual has and puts it in the context of social situations. As humans, we are not solitary creatures and seek the company of other individuals. The way that individuals think others view them and the way he or she view themselves have a big role to play in why he or she is the person that they are.
CORRELATIONAL RESEARCH Correlational Research in Psychology LeighAnn Hancock Kaplan University PS300-Research Method I Professor Myeisha Leiva October 2, 2012 Correlational Research in Psychology Psychologists employ a number of different scientific methods to conduct research on social psychology topics. Employing these methods allows researchers to test hypotheses and theories by looking for relationships between different variables. Social psychologists use correlational research in order to identify relationships between naturally occurring variables. Conducting surveys is a popular method for researchers to use to gather data needed for a correlational study. Surveys allow researchers to predict and describe people’s opinions, attitudes and preferences by computing a correlation coefficient and determining the strength and direction of the relationship between the two naturally occurring variables.
The behaviorism start to make the field of psychology a mainstream scientific by observing one behavior. The field of psychoanalysis is another school of thought. Sigmund Freud best known for his work in psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a term that was used to refer the different parts of Freud's research, which would include the Freudian therapy and how he developed this theories through his research. Psychoanalysis deals with the thoughts and motivations that are outside of our awareness which is influence our behavior.
Because of science one now can measure these processes and quantify them so that cognitive psychologist may use behavioral observation to measure damage, mental processes and mental states. Because of cognitive science, cognitive psychologist are able to see just what is going on within a person’s brain and make the most educated guess on how he or she should be treated because of their behavior (Van Wagner, 2009). Behavior of individuals can be observed and watched, measured and tested, and a conclusion can be made from behavior on whether or not cognitive psychology is the best treatment for the individual. Even though cognitive psychology arose in response to behaviorism, this does not mean that behavior is not important for the
