The biological Level of Analysis views humans as biological organisms. It focuses on the brain (nervous system), endocrine system and the genes. Biopsychologists adopt a reductionistic approach that is explaining complex phenomena by breaking it down to smaller and simpler parts (parsimony). Even though Biopsychologists focus on the biological aspects of behavior they do not rule out the environment and thus this relationship is called bidirectional. However, studying the humans as biological organisms would not be able if it wasn’t for technological advances. Nowadays Biopsychologists have modern brain scanning tools to study both structure and function of the brain while the organism is still alive. The biological LOA has three main principles. One of them is that there are biological correlates of behavior. This principle reflects a desire to find the causes of behavior and emotion, and thought within the body. Indeed, links have been found between psychological events and physiological activity especially in the area of the effects of hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted by glands and can have a widespread effect on both physiology and psychology in humans. The system of glands that releases hormones into the bloodstream is called the endocrine system. However since the hormones are released directly into the bloodstream, the take longer to produce changes in behavior than other chemical substances (neurotransmitters). Two common hormones in our body are oxytocin and melatonin. Oxytocin is a hormone which plays a role in inducing labour contractions and lactation. Further research showed that oxytocin also plays a role in human social bonding. The next hormone, melatonin, has a significant role in the cycle of sleep. It is released from the pineal gland at the base of the brain at the base of the brain. This gland is sometimes
