Positives with the Internet and Growing Up The youth generation today uses the internet so much in their daily lives it has created an epidemic. The epidemic caused uproar of different ways of learning, communicating, teaching and even shopping or advertising done online. Technologies such as ipad, laptops and smart phones make internet access unbelievably easy. Since it is so easy, “Growing up Online”, a document by Frontline that aired on Januarary 18, 2008, claimed that the internet has caused many issues in the youth’s lives. One problem the internet caused stated in the documentary is, it is very hard for parents and authorities to regulate what kids do on the computer.
The disadvantages of social media would be when it’s used inappropriately. Hackers can get personal information such as your name and address if it’s available on the site. Google is by far the worst example of an information supplier, in that, a search on Google can inundate the reader with an outlandish list of results. The majority of these results are often not what most educators would consider scholarly work, but instead opinion and conjecture. Wikipedia on the other hand, advertises itself as an encyclopedia type service. While their information is rather extensive and referenced for the reader, its basic flaw is that it is collaborative software. It allows its contributors to freely edit the content that is broadcast through the internet.
Students do not realize that plagiarizing someone else’s work is actually stealing. The educational system does not teach this to students. The educational system should teach that you have to cite an author even if you just take their idea and do not use their exact words. The online companies that generate essays for students should be outlawed. This is making it where students that have a lot of money can easily get by with actually learning how to write correctly.
