Monica Reis EGL-311 Controversy Concerning Cyber Bullying In the 21st century cyber bullying has become a part of our everyday lives. It is deliberating harming an individual or group of individuals through information and computer technologies. This fast growing trend has some experts believing it to be more detrimental than typical school yard bullying; because of the “24/7” access society has with the internet. (Webster, Chris, 2007). A recent studied stated that approximately half of teenagers who are either in middle school or high school have been bullied through at least one source of electronic technology.
While there are positive outcomes of the internet, there still exist dangerous aspects to it, such as bullying. Most people may associate bullying with images of a teenager getting slammed into a locker, or getting their lunch money stolen. People may also think that it extends to name calling, teasing, and insults. Bullying has existed for a long time, with some adults thinking that it is a normal part of growing up, that teaches young adults to toughen up and have a thick skin, thinking this will help when they become adults. However, with the advancement in technology and its wide use, a new type of bullying has developed, cyberbullying, which is when a person uses technology and/or electronic devices to bully another person, typically by sending messages or posting comments of an intimidating or threatening nature.
Before wanting to delete cyber bullying, it is important to know what it is and how is it formed. Then we will know why it must be deleted. What is cyber bullying? Cyber bullying, in simple terms, is the harassment of a child that is caused by another child by using the internet. Cyber bullying is worse than normal bullying because it occurs on the internet, which is a much larger scale.
During Anti-bullying week the school will have special assemblies to demonstrate the types of bullying and how children can report this behaviour. As a Teaching Assistant I should be seen to be approachable to speak to about any concerns that the children may have, that these discussions are confidential and that they will receive support, guidance and protection from all parties involved in bullying and violence. Bullying comes in different forms such as: • Verbal – this is when someone is called names, threatened and made to feel bad • Physical – this is when someone is hit, punched, pushed or have their personal items stolen and any other kind of physical, aggressive contact. • Social - Social bullying is when someone is left out of games, deliberately ignored and has bad things spread about them and made to feel like an outsider. • Psychological / Mental – this is when someone is intimidated and stalked • Cyber – In this technological age Cyber Bullying has become a problem.
Can we really raise children to be moral if we discipline children immorally? The way we discipline our children determines the way they understand what they did wrong, how they will behave in the future and how they will discipline their own children. Unfortunately much of what we do in the name of discipline is immoral and causes more harm than good. This is why bullying has been becoming a more serious problem. In the book "Lost in Transition: The Dark Side of Emerging Adulthood" by Christian Smith, he sheds light on why bullying may be on the rise.
However, it is the type of monitoring that the author and I disagree on. The Undercover Parent raised the question of, does responsibility rest with the child or the parent? Children and young people are at risk of bullying when using the internet, mobile phone and other technologies as it provides an anonymous method of bullying by way of text messages and emails which can be emotionally damaging to a child or young person. Racist, anti-social and cult groups use modern technologies to preach and spread what they are and what they stand for, leaving children and young people very venerable to becoming part of their activity which is unhealthy, unsafe and often illegal. In essence, Cyberbullying is the inappropriate use of a technological device to harass, degrade or defame another. Students and adults today, feel pressure from their peers to resolve issues without direct contact with their nemesis. Victimized persons exhibited emotional instability, low self-esteem and high levels of anxiety. Cyberbullying can be prevented by teaching netiquette, educational training in schools and educating teachers of symptoms that students might exhibit as a result of bullying. What is Sexting?
As violence increases, the pressure for a safe and orderly school does the same. I believe that the first step that we can make to ensure school safety is to work with the students and explain that it takes everyone to establish a safe school. Violence in school has changed from bloody noses to pulling out a bloody gun and shooting an innocence person. , Children are so desensitized to violence from TVs, video games, and especially their environment. Young teenagers tend to imitate what they see exposing them to violence before they can understand it does not help them Violence just destroys their future by ending up in prison or the grave at an early age.
The extra stress of care and expenses can sometimes take a toll on the parents or caregiver which can lead to abuse. Also the condition of the child could prevent the ability to fight back or tell someone. People have to be extra mindful to look for signs of abuse and be extra supportive of the ones taking care of disabled children. Due to advances in technology, children are susceptible to internet predators. Children are meeting sexual predators on the internet and forming relationships with them and unknowingly allowing them into their lives.
