College degrees are being more and more sought after as they become more prevalent in the business world, but the people enrolling in universities are becoming less fit to attend them. In the article, “Is College For Everyone?”, Pharinet argues that many people attending college do not belong there. This essay will analyze Pharinet’s article and explore the topic of whether or not college is beneficial to all individuals. Pharinet begins the article by stating that more and more people are attending two and four year colleges. The purpose of this article is to prove that college is not designed for every individual.
“The Case Against College Education” Thesis: College is not for everyone and it is absurd that society puts so much pressure on attending it. SR# 1: We are pushing students into college who are not meant for it. -40% of students who enrolled in college drop out. SR# 2: Benefits of putting more people in college are oversold. -the college wage premium is an illusion.
If you received As in sophomore year, and Cs in senior year, they will conclude that you are a capable student who became lazy. Coursework High school graduation requirements vary from school to school. Most students have the opportunity to take more classes (or credits) then are required to graduate. If you take only the minimum, colleges will conclude that you are doing the least you must do to get by. If you take extra classes (or credits) but they are soft-ball classes (like basket-weaving or calisthenics), this looks just as bad.
Another group of students who benefit from choosing the two-year path is those who want to pursue a vocational or technical education. Practically all careers that will provide meaningful work both financially and psychologically require more education than a high school diploma. If a studentâs financial situation requires working while going to school, a community college will offer more flexibility when scheduling courses. Students who truly are unsure about attending college can benefit by experimenting with higher education at the community college level. Still other students plan eventual transfer to a four-year college but may not be financially,
What is Best for YOU ? During your high school years there is this societal pressure put upon students that it is important to attend a four year university. In school teachers and counselors make it important that students meet their A-G requirements to be eligible to apply to a four year university. In the article “On the Uses of Education: As Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students” by Mark Edmundson he argues how generations of students are soaked up into the consumer culture before going off to school, treated as customers by universities before the date of their arrival (Edmundson 300). Not only is higher education corrupted by entertainment consumer culture mentality that causes colleges to be run like businesses, but alternatives to four year institutions are ignored.
The SAT might have made sense when it was developed in the 1920s, when higher education was an elitist proposition and the college admission pipeline led a relatively homogeneous population of young adults into a similarly uni-dimensional set of colleges and universities (Creighton). Standardized testing is not good for all students because some students test better than others. There are some who have amazing GPAs and academically do well in school but might test very poorly. Parents have complained in the past to school administration that
Getting a college education is something that most of us strive to get our entire lives. While many of us strive to do well in high school in hopes of getting in to a college of our choice, nowadays we can find many people enrolled in “profit colleges” that focus more on the money aspect rather than giving knowledge. “Profit” colleges such as University of Phoenix encourage people to take out an outrageous loan for education that ends up being a burden to pay for in the long run. In the movie, “College Inc” it states that “Around 44 percent of students who take out federal loans to attend a for-profit college default on those loans.” After watching “College Inc,” I had no idea how much of our education was being offered online. Many of these
Well, one might argue that the parents of home schooled children pay taxes for public schools. Let me ask you how would you feel if a person who did not work as hard as you did come and take your starting varsity spot. To make varsity a student has to work hard mentally and physically, but when a person who did not work as hard as you did it just seems unfair that the actually have a right to do that. Ken Killy who wrote the article “A Privilege not a Right”. In the article he stated that “its unfair to say that a student at school needs to pass five classes for credit towards graduation or meet a minimum eligibility requirement to play a sport while the home schooled student just needs a letter stating that they have meet the average grade requirement .” This demonstrates a high school athlete has that balance between sports and academics while the homeschooler does
Gray, author of the School Choice and Achievement, say that "without advanced mathematics in high school are unlikely to succeed in the hard sciences and engineering." Therefore, students in the United States are likely to be at risk of losing labor markets. over the last two decades researchers and advocates have debated the benefits and shortages of school choice. There have been many concerns that local parents and communities have been absent from being involved in the public schools. Evidence shows that families of charter school students are more satisfied with charter schools than the traditional public
The barriers that undocumented students face in their path to a higher education can be overcome with the help of the Federal Government. And these can be done by passing a bill that helps undocumented students with there financial and illegal difficulties. For many years the U.S. has made it hard for undocumented students to attend college, and all because of their illegal status. These are undocumented students whose illegal status didn’t matter as they attended elementary school. But all of that changes on the day that they reach senior year in high school at the process of filling out the college application and financial-aid forms.
