Drum Major Behind every functional marching band there is at least one or more Drum Majors. The Drum Major leads the band in discipline, knowledge, and fitness. Every marching band has a band director that is in charge of the band. The band also has another person who is in charge directed by the band director. This person is called the Drum Major. The Drum Major is in charge of almost everything in the band during football season. The Drum Major has to be the role model of the band. He also has to lead the band in music. The Drum majors first job is learning how to discipline in a non-stern way. Drum Majors have to learn how to understand what people are feeling, why people aren’t getting the music or how the drill that is written. They have to be able to teach people. They have to understand why teaching is so valuable and how to fully explain every little detail. They can’t get frustrated easily because someone doesn’t understand how to do something. The Drum Major also has to be knowledgeable about music, drill, and movement. The Drum Major has to memorize at least 12 songs every single week. Every Drum major needs to know the music for every part in the band. They have to be able to learn at least 3 songs in drill for the bands field show. They have to learn about 10 pages of drill every song. That means they have to memorize up to but not limited to 30 pages of drill in one week. The Drum Major also has to physically fit. The Drum Major has to be able to run, stretch, strut across the field, carry a 30-pound mace, and have good balance. He also has to mentally fit as well. He has to learn to deal with whiney kids, and be able to take constructive criticism. He has to know that the band director will yell him at, and he will be blamed for anything that goes wrong with the band. The drum major has to be able to take the yelling and turn
