Does the Singapore nation truly exist? To what extent do you agree with this statement? Explain your answer. What is a nation exactly? In dictionary terms, it may mean a soul, a spiritual principle. Two things, which in truth are but one, constitute this soul or spiritual principle. One lies in the past, one in the present. One is the possession in common of a rich legacy of memories; the other is present- day consent, the desire to live together, the will to perpetuate the value of the heritage that one has received in an undivided form. Although I agree with this politically correct statement, I still feel that besides this, a nation is something more. It is something to do with how Singaporeans feel about Singapore . Nationality is a psychological disposition or sentiment. In Singapore’s case, it is actually if we Singaporeans feel an innate sense of belonging in our hearts. Being proud of Singapore, and proud to be a Singaporean. It is whether we share a common bond and a sense of unity that arises from shared beliefs and customs. Although there are still differing views of whether a Singapore nation truly exists, to me, it does and always will. However one thing to note is that, despite its presence already, the Singapore nation is still in the making with much more room for improvement and development. Yes I do agree that the Singapore nation exists, in the sense that we already have achieved a branding, both in the eyes of our people and the world alike. The government has tried so hard to brand Singapore as a multi racial country, incorporating with it a unique identity that both Singaporeans and foreigners would recognize and acknowledge the fact that Singapore is a nation.
