Good interpersonal relationship plays an important role between people and organizations. Carroll (2010) states that good work relationships are “pivotal to getting positive results and developing team harmony”. The presence of “seamless” interpersonal communication in a workplace enables the staff to focus on their work and not be sidetracked by poor professional relationships. Maes, Weldy & Icenogle (1997) mentioned that the key to having a successful career is also dependent largely on interpersonal skills. Interpersonal skills therefore do affect the quality of workplace relationships in an organization to a certain degree. In order to better understand the development of positive working relationships, we can zero in on two aspects of interpersonal skills: self-concept and self- disclosure. Self-concept is influential in all the aspects of our lives, and especially so in our career. Pastorino & Doyle-Portillo (2013) defines self-concept as a “perception or image of our abilities and our uniqueness.” Positive and negative self-concept properties exist in all of us. Positive self –concept arises from positive self-esteem, positive self-evaluation, self-respect and self-acceptance. According to De Janasz (2069), people with high level of self-awareness tend to be superior managers. Given their high level of self-esteem, they are able to “place themselves in the shoes of others” when attempting to understand a problem or issue. They are usually receptive of feedback and are willing to share ideas, thereby leading to improved communications. This ability to relate enables them to win the trust of their peers/subordinates. Usually good listeners by nature, they go on to defuse conflicts and disagreements. Self-respect and self-acceptance also play a vital role in self-concept as it enables us to tweak our behavior to suit different situations. Positive
