I consider communication to be successful when the desired objective is attained. All communication has a purpose, whether to inform, to convince or to serve some other purpose; communication is what ties all departments within our care home together. Everyone is different and should be treated individually; you learn very quickly people’s individual communication styles. You are dealing with a wide range of personalities and abilities and your own communication style has to deliver to a diverse group with differing skill sets, and communication abilities. My level of communication within my job role is of extreme importance with regards to the client who should be at the heart of all communication around any establishment or company.

I am expected in my job role to adhere to the NISCC codes of practice and follow the policies and procedures set in place by the company I work for. These include Communication, Health and safety, Personal development, Health and wellbeing of service users and many more. We need to ensure that we provide adequate care to a high standard and ensure that our record keeping is up to date and relevant to what support we have provided.

Before the support can be given you will need to assess their personal needs and preferences are taken into account. A service user’s assessment would be done when they come in to the care setting to give the team the idea of the service user basic communication needs and how they are met, and through time and careful observation a much more detailed care plan would be developed and put in place. They may be key people whom are a part of the service user life who would be able to give information or assess information of the communication’s needs and how these are meet: * Family * Friends * GP * Speech therapist * Care staff * Therapist Good communication can make a big difference with the service user and the way they are cared for. As careers we complete communication books for each individual to keep all members of staff informed and aware of current situations. We also communicate to maintain and establish relationships with others, to share opinions, knowledge, emotions, to give encouragement and show others they are valued. The individuals will communicate with carers to express their needs and to ensure they are met. As a Carer I would also discuss the options and choices available to allow them an informed choice. 1.2: Explain how communication affects relationships in the work setting.

Case Managers, commissioners and if registered, CQC all must be kept current, along with Operation and Regional Managers of the organisation. 1.2 Communication in a service has to be constantly monitored and adapted if not proving to be effective. A communication book is an excellent communication tool, staff make a note of any appointments, telephone calls, meetings that have happened during their shift. When staffs come on duty they must first read the communication book, and then sign each entry.
