Daoism Extra Credit The movie Avatar had many aspects of the ancient Chinese religion Daoism since the very essence of the movie portrayed the belief that nature contains a divine impulse that directs all life, which it showed through the relationships between the Na’vis their environment. One connection between the movie and Daoism is the way the Na’vis didn’t desire anything the sky people could offered them, whether it was roads, technology, or money. This reluctance to accept these outside influences is a representation of the Daoist belief that political activity and learning were irrelevant to a good life. The Na’vis didn’t need or want anything the Sky people tried to buy them off with because they were content with their lifestyle and did not believe these new materials would make it better. Another connection to Daoism is the way the Na’vis connected themselves with their animals. This shows the Daoist belief of the importance of harmony with nature since the rider of the animals literally connected with their animals in order to be in harmony with them. Without doing this, they couldn’t ride the animals since they were not ‘connected’, meaning that in order to coexist with this form of nature they must be in a harmonious balance with it. Daoism is represented in Avatar when Grace died and the Tsahik said that she was now “one with Eywa”. This shows Daoism because of its connection with the Daoist belief that there is no “death” but only a transfer of energy, a release from the body. When she dies, Grace is connected to the sacred tree and therefore connected to the force of nature, and is said to be now one with Eywa and when her spirit drains away, into the earth and into Eywa. Daoism is once again displayed in the scene where Neytiri explains to Jake that the great mother, Eywa, does not take sides and solely protects the balance of life.
