Cultural and Linguistic Differences ECE 405 Children & Families in a Diverse Society Instructor: Keli Keyes Danielle Bryant 09/26/2012 In our world today there are many cultural differences. Some of the differences in our world can affect our parents, schools, and students. When it comes to culture the school must be aware that there are some differences that can greatly affect their students’ success. During my review of the learning center module I learned that there are many cultural differences that students face on a daily basis. In this paper I will discuss some of the differences that may affect a students’ success, analyze how Maria’s bilingualism was addressed by the school and Mr. Bennett and any cultural or linguistic considerations which seem to have been largely ignored. Suggest possible reasons for Maria’s behavior in the classroom, tardiness for school and Maria’s parents’ perceived lack of involvement in her education. I will assess what the scenario told me about the concept of multicultural education and how race and gender come into play. Lastly I will recommend strategies which I, as her teacher, will use to better equip Maria for academic success. The first thing that I would like to discuss is the challenge that Maria faces in school. According to the module Maria faces struggles in school. Maria is late for school every day. When a student is late for school he or she is missing out on very important information that is given out at the beginning of school. According to Mr. Bennett and Ms. Casey she is also behind in her reading class because she is so late to school every day she misses most of her reading class. I believe that because Maria is from a different culture she is facing a reading problem. She also struggles in her math class. Maria seems to struggle in Language only in the class room. Mr. Bennett says that
