CRANK & THE LOVELY BONES Synthesis Essay English 11 Honours In both novels, Crank by Ellen Hopkins and The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold are both narrated by young female characters, who both have family issues. The two protagonist' parents drift apart and do not have a good, loving, relationship. These conflicts within the girls' families cause not only problems at home but an internal struggle for the protagonists. Crank is narrated by Kristina, who also refers to herself as 'Bree'. Kristina's parents had separated when she was quite young and her father moved far away after the divorce. Her mother, because of her hate towards her ex-husband, rarely gives him the chance to see his daughter. However, Kristina goes to visit him for three weeks and soon realizes her and her father barely know each other anymore. This greatly troubles her, and she finds it difficult to be around him. She is also upset with her mother, who is dating a new man and as a result seems to be a completely new person all together. Kristina seems to mature as the novel continues. It is clear that she is beginning to gain some self-understanding and realizes that she can become close with each of her parents again if she tries hard. The Lovely Bones is narrated by Susie Salmon, a normal fourteen year-old girl. She is murdered in a cornfield one day on her way back from school. The Salmon family is forever changed as a result of Susie’s murder. Susie watches as her parents drift apart and her siblings and friends grow up and have experiences Susie can only witness. Her mother, Abigail, wants to run away from her feelings, whereas her father, Jack, wants to confront those feelings head on. Susie is extremely pained by what she see's happening to her parents. It is hard for her to deal with these conflicts at first, but quite like Kristina, she gains a certain understanding as the
