Page 1 The following essay is an overview of a role play featuring myself as a counsellor and a class mate as my client. The purpose of this role play is to demonstrate counselling skills that I have obtained from both modules counselling one and two. My partner was advised to discuss a real issue so as I was able to apply the skills in witch I have learnt. The discussion took just over twenty minutes and feedback was offered by other counselling student’s whom were present on the day. My practice partner\client was issued a client\interviewee consent form.
The conversation flowed well, they listened to each other and the outcome was successful. Next will be the identification and Evaluation of skills used in the video recording of Gwen and Frank. Active listening,
This is usually well received by people I interact with, in a team setting. In my team assignments for this course for example, I believe I am doing very well as a leader, as everything is running like clockwork for my team. I have set routines
I support effective communication by actively listening to what individuals are saying and by giving them time to respond and by showing understanding to what is being said or expressed. I support effective communication in my job role by recording information accurately and legibly and by having 1-1 formal or informal supervision. In my Job role I enhance my working practice in relation to effective communication by undertaking organisational and vocational training such as POVA and MAPA to enhance my communication skills in working with vulnerable adults with limited communication skills and NVQ 3. As an Assessor I am able to support others to communicate effectively with service users and
I offered my client empathy, understanding and respect. Used open ended questions, actively listened and gently challenged my client when appropriate, remaining aware of boundaries. (2013, BACP) I recorded information to use in supervision, how one response led to another, the nonverbal communication used by my client and my own thoughts as the session proceeded. Supervision was able to give me space to look at my work I had supervision which allowed me to reflect on relating to my client and to gain insights from the perspective of another therapist. (Jacobs, 1998)Supervision offered me three main functions.
We will let her know that there is an open line of communication so if she ever feels uncomfortable or needs assistance on something that she does not feel knowledgeable or confident about then she can always go to a supervisor’s office. She will also be offered personal therapy to make her feel more comfortable and confident in her own sessions. Personal therapy should help benefit her in her personal and professional life (Oteiza 2010). Her personal therapy sessions should help her become more comfortable working with families instead of just children. Janice is a great part of this agency and after she completes some personal therapy and the policies are reviewed and enforced that records must be submitted in a
One issue that maybe encountered is involuntary group members. Corey, Williams, and Moline (1995) explained that ethically a counselor should advise clients of their rights, privileges and duties, as well as, advise them of any probable concerns they face if they choose to follow treatment. Another issue that may be encountered in group therapy is informed consent, which is extremely important when participation is mandatory. Informed consent is something that all counselors and counselor have to obtain from clients. Fallon (2006) states it is important because certain guidelines have to be followed by the counselor during a session and when a client becomes involuntary this puts the counselor in a comprising position.
(p.16) My primary aim was to learn but I also achieved a measure of resolve with my problem. My feelings before, during and after the session are analysed and discussed, the session is summarised, the key skills used by Annie and their impact on me are identified and challenges for the counsellor and the client are identified with suggestions for strategies to best manage these challenges. Verbatim dialogue from the session is provided throughout the essay as examples and, finally, the overall experience is considered I had
I rarely call in sick. I am conscientious about supplies that are used, being careful not to contaminate or use more supplies than necessary. When patients are admitted to our unit, I start discharge planning and instructions as soon as possible in order to make the discharge from the unit as expedient as possible. Professional development: I am able to improve my personal performance at work by attending continuing education courses, attending hospital training classes and inservices, and maintaining nurse licensure that is always in good standing. I read professional nursing journals and visit nurse websites in my free time to keep up to date on new trends, treatments, and medications.
Counselling sessions can help us work through a range of personal issues from everyday hardships to potentially life threatening situations. In this reflective essay I propose to put theory to practice by analysing and reflecting upon a one hour session with a professional counsellor. The session is to be recorded so I can refer to particular instances during the session. By discussing this particular experience in detail, I can begin to understand the specific skills a counsellor may use in many different situations in order to help others (Egan, 2007, p. 13). In this reflective essay I will focus on particular areas of face-to-face counselling that could often be overlooked such as body language, empathy, rapport building and questioning.
