Anton Georgiev Medieval discoveries The Middle Ages began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and it ended in the beginning of the fifteenth century. During that period, the world witnessed many changes on the political map of Europe, the rise and fall of the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Carolingians, the urbanization of Europe and even the beginning of the Renaissance. Breakthrough in science and technology, as well as construction innovations, took place during the Middle Ages. Great artists and scientists enriched the culture of the people. Some of the most recognizable contributions of that period are the invention of the compass, the printing press and the spectacles. In the eleventh century medieval Europe saw the dawn of Universities. The artists from that time period discovered the benefits of using oil paint to add details to their works of art. All of these advancements and inventions, not only propelled the world ahead, yet they are still being used today.
