Good Morning, My name is Trevor, and I am here as a supporter of the Coalition for Commercial Moose (CCM). CCM is a new group pushing for approval of commercially hunted, harvested and sold moose meat in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Commercial moose meat will be a local commodity that provides an economically sound and financially beneficial way to deal with the moose population in Newfoundland. The desired outcome is that the government of Newfoundland will set a quota of commercial moose tags that will be bought, hunted, processed and sold to local stores and meet all health and safety measures along the way. To understand the benefits of this new industry, a proper understanding of the effects moose have on Newfoundland is needed. Moose are not native to Newfoundland; they were introduced in 1904 by the government of Newfoundland and have since thrived in our forests, bogs and marshes. Today in Newfoundland and Labrador, the population of moose is estimated to be between 120,000 and 150,000 moose, with each animal weighing between 600 to 1200 pounds.…show more content…
Currently, commercial sale of moose meat is prohibited in Newfoundland, but it is not unheard of. In Sweden, moose are hunted in the wild, harvested and sold as a local commodity. The industry is regulated by the Federal Government in both the amount of moose hunted and the safety of the meat. The population of moose is still sustainable, but is better managed and provides a financial benefit opposed to a loss. This opportunity to save lives and money should be appealing to the government, which is why I am speaking to you today. This opportunity needs to be heard, and it needs to be voiced by the many for the few. With the support of many students and residents, CCM will become more visible and an appealing option to those in power.
