Rebel Wellness College is ideal for the freedom that it offers, but is also known for causing high levels of stress for many students. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center promotes health and wellness to help students focus more on the mental and physical conditions of their bodies. The 184,000 square foot recreation center provides many different services including the gym, Counseling and Psychological Services, and a Disability Resource Center. These different facilities improve physical, emotional, and intellectual health to help individuals stay fit and healthy while seeking academic success. In Charles Murray’s, “Too Many People Are Going to College,” he claims that students envision college as the best place to mature. Students are no longer expected to be told right from wrong and be handed everything they need. Instead, they are expected to make the right choices that would benefit them the most while reaching out for whatever help they need. Murray states, “The college curriculum demands the students’ most strenuous efforts, so that students who succeed in getting degrees must necessarily have learned how to allocate their time, set priorities, and discipline themselves” (70). CWPA, NCTE, and NWP claim in “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing,” that “Habits of mind refers to ways of approaching learning that are both intellectual and practical and that will support students’ success in a variety of fields and disciplines” (122). At the Recreation Center, responsibility and persistence are habits of the mind that most students apply. Persistence, which the authors describes, is the “ability to sustain interest in and attention to short and long-term projects,” that pushes these students to come back throughout their education, regardless of how high their workload has piled up (122). When approaching college, students find it much more difficult to schedule exercising while balancing out their college life. There are exams to study for, deadlines to meet, and expectations to live up to. The lack of planning and organization often causes stress, but when being able to follow a workout plan, you are then capable of setting and achieving goals which can be applied to other situations. This helps students find the importance of time management and dedication. On the other hand, responsibility, defined as one’s “ability to take ownership of their actions and understand the consequences of those actions for oneself and others,” is the reason why students can keep up with their health and schoolwork (123).
