CHRIST DESCENT INTO LIMBO BY JACOPO BELLINI This image depicts renaissance art, perceived as a revival of ancient ethnicities, took as its foundation the art of classical existence, but has changed that tradition by the absorption of recent developments in the art of Northern Europe and by application of contemporary scientific knowledge. Renaissance art know as rebirth art spread throughout Europe, affecting both artists and their patrons with the growth of new techniques and new artistic awareness. Renaissance art marks the transition of Europe from the primitive period to the early modern age. In my search for many different pieces of art, Jacopo Bellini’s Christ Descent into Limbo portrait was the most intriguing. I wanted to get to the bottom of what was going on with this portrait. There were many different topics to be discussed just by observing. This image has a many dark colors, dark bodies with wings and tails; it also has what seems to be normal people, and Jesus himself. Also in describing this portrait I would believe just by looking at it that these people in these caves are crying for help or forgiveness to be set free. Jesus seems to be letting the ones go that can be set free, but as they are set free they turn into these devilish images trying to get away. Maybe he is signifying that it’s better for them to stay where they are then to become these awful creatures. The male who is standing next to the cross looks as if he is getting a second chance. The colors being so dark resembling that this place isn’t a great place to be and if Jesus is actually making them stay there for some reason then they have obviously done something wrong and maybe he is ashamed of them. Christ’s Descent is the event of Christ’s journey to limbo after his crucifixion to rescue the Old Testament forefathers, patriarchs, martyrs and prophets, who were not damned but
