Unit 068 outcome 1.1 Speech – the expression of or ability to express thoughts and feelings by articulate sounds. Language – the method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way. Communication – the imparting or exchanging of information or news. Speech, Language and communication needs – difficulty in speech, language or communication. Outcome 1.2 Learning – language is the vehicle for most learning, and proficiency in speech, language and communication is critical to the development of children’s cognitive, social and emotional well-being. Poor language skills will impact on children’s attainment in school. Emotional – good understanding is needed to support the success of programmes such as social emotional aspects of learning (SEAL). Behaviour – speech, language and communication skills support behaviour, as with inadequate skills, a child may become frustrated not being able to communicate and get their point across and therefore may cause behaviour difficulties. However, they may also be able to learn to behave in a way in which they can communicate. Being able to communicate effectively promotes self esteem and confidence. Social – speech, language and communication skills help children to make friends and respond to each other. Without language, the ability to make and maintain these friendships can be affected. Some children may become withdrawn. A child with excellent speech, language and communication skills is likely to form strong attachments and friendships and therefore be more confident. Outcome 1.3 A child with speech, language and communication difficulties are more likely to be slightly behind in some other areas of development, such as personal, social and emotional, due to being unable to maintain friendships.
