Over consumption has led to many cures and medicines being created, and has made the world a better and safer place then it once was. The Buy Nothing Day would only hinder the progress that mankind has made in keeping the environment intact. The way of life in the 21st century has and will be defined by consumerism. Consumerism has lifted nations out of recessions and created millions of jobs and opportunities. The Buy Nothing Day is just a way for environmentalists to voice their theories about how to fix the environment.
This is quite an efficient method of production and the amount of the PHB polymer yielded is around 30-80% of the dry weight of the micro-organisms used. Even though this method is efficient it is still not quite economically viable as there is the high cost of using the agar solution, petri dishes and the removal of the nitrogen. More recently as this biopolymers potential to society has become more prominent, scientists are trying to develop more efficient and sustainable means to produce it. In 1992 the idea of using genetically modified plants to produce PHB was developed at Michigan State University. By using the genes from two bacteria producing organisms such as Alcaligenes Eutrophus, they could insert them into cress plants with the aim of these plants producing the PHB.
There is the possible pollution of air as well. Contamination could make anyone who depends on a healthy ecosystem to earn a living could become ill or potentially have their livelihood destroyed. This shows that hydraulic fracturing could be very dangerous. However, although there are negative effects to hydraulic fracturing, there are also positive ways to look at these technological breakthroughs. Hydraulic fracturing can and has helped many communities receive economic gains, thanks to the increase in gas and oil production.
This is clear because they are the strongest behind the global warming issues, coming up with hybrid cars so as to reduce the pollution of the environment, encouraging recycling, go green which is the talk of the time and many other aspects that encourages to keep the environment safe. For instance the increase in the consumption of organic food shows that the Americans not only believe it is good for their health; they also believe it is good for the environment because the lesser the chemicals use in growing food, the lesser the chemicals being used in the environment that will not only pollute the air but also affects our water that we drink. This therefore implies the American society today is more concern with keeping the environment safe than lavishing on big stuff like cars, though people still buy big stuff but they put more in encouraging to keep the environment
Repercussions of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War Our modern society and technology revolves around many different chemical compounds. Advances in the chemical field of herbicides or pesticides, while being beneficial to our society, can come at a price. Without proper testing and research, harmful chemical compounds may be released into the environment unknowingly. Some compounds, even though thoroughly tested, may only exhibit malicious effects years after being introduced to the environment. Such a case would be the story of Agent Orange.
“Into the Electronic Millenium” Sven Birkerts Most individuals, if not the world, may consider technological innovations and advances to be a beneficial aspect in our contemporary society. However, according to Sven Birkerts in his article, “Into the Electronic Millennium,” the assimilation of technology into our society has only affected us negatively. On one hand, the usage of these modern gadgets has caused detrimental effects to our daily language, altering the way we speak and communicate for the worse. On the other hand, such electric components have also provoked a loss of value for privacy as well. In accord with Birkerts ideals, I too, agree in the detrimental effects evoked from such technological advances.
Pollution Prevention Melissa D. Byerley ENV 325: Environmental Management Instructor Robin Glenn June 10, 2013 There are a variety of ways to prevent pollution including altering production or manufacturing processes, eliminating waste at the source, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, reusing materials or items, and population control; which can all work simultaneously for a better world, but issues such as political processes and policies create a hindrance. The many ideas surrounding pollution prevention are quite often simple, but due to economic impacts, these options are not always favorable because worldwide governments want the most successful economy possible, and
Genetic diversity will also be greatly reduced, leaving the human race susceptible to certain diseases. The scientists with all their knowledge and skills, do not know what future consequences are in store for the designer babies. In my opinion, the ramifications could be great for such a trivial purpose. Perhaps society would be better served if scientist focused more on the enormous importance of environmental influences on our health in the future. While the public may not know much about designer babies it is hugely debated within the scientific community.
It would be best if these technologies that make our lives so much easier and convenient would also make it easier for the entire planet. Pollution is a very big concern for everyone. Air, water, and noise pollutions are byproducts of modernization because humans have simply overlooked the environment for so long a time. Again, there is nothing wrong in wanting to advance to the next level - but we owe it to the planet to consider its needs as well. Now that so many groups and individuals (even businesses) have started to go green and to think green, it may not really be too late for this planet.
Many state Environmental Protection Agencies, are taking a closer look at what fracking is doing to the environment in their specific states. Though nothing is going to be perfectly safe, placing standards and following through are the first steps in any process. Companies are starting to see the devastation drilling is causing in communities. Some have taken their own steps to correct environmental issues and are working with environmentalists to keep the planet and those who inhabit it safe. Hopefully the higher standards these companies are implementing will be forced on those who just drill for the money with no respect for our health or environment.
