The body of Charles Walton (74) was found at the bottom of Meon Hill, Warwickshire, England. He was working as a casual farm laborer at a farm called The Firs Farm, which was eight miles from Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford upon Avon and was considered by locals to be filled with Druid artifacts and used for pagan festivals and witchcraft. He was a solitary man, a widow, but had adopted his niece Edith Walton when her parents had died. She was 33 when Walton was murdered. He walked with a stick because he suffered from rheumatism and when he set off to cut the hedges at Meon Hill that morning, he carried with him his stick, a pitchfork and a fruitcake for his lunch. Reasons why Potter was a suspect ● He had given evidence saying that he had seen Walton from a distance in shirt sleeves and yet when the body was discovered Walton still wore his jacket. When it was removed, he had on a short-sleeved shirt so Walton could not have seen him when he said he did. ● Potter had touched the murder weapons but did not admit to this until February 20th when the police said that they would have to dust them for fingerprints. He made up a story that the neighbor who had found the body with him said that Potter should check to make sure that Walton was definitely dead. He obviously was. Potter said that this was when he had touched the weapons. The neighbor denied telling Potter to check the body and said that he had not seen him touch the weapons whilst he had been there. ● Shortly after the murder, two of his staff left his employment perhaps after finding out what sort of a man they were working
