Luan Nguyen Professor Dodge English 1302 6 February 2012 This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona Critical Analysis In Sherman Alexie’s “This Is What It Means To Say Phoenix, Arizona” the main character Victor just got fired from his job and also learned that his father had just passed away. He needed help and money to go to Phoenix to claim his father’s ashes and belongings. This help came from the town’s outcast, Thomas Builds-The Fire. Victor and Thomas were best friends during their childhood but as they grew older, Victor turned his back on his best friend all because he was considered “weird” by everyone. The purpose of the journey was to gather his father’s remains instead turned into a journey reviewing his life and choices.
Link is boy, whom his mother started seeing a man, Vince, after his father left them. Vince happens to be very abusing, and holds a grudge against Link and his sister, Carol. Due to his behavior, and after an argument, Carol decides to leave the house and live with her boyfriend. Tension started growing in the house, and so the consequences were large on Link. He started to perform badly at school and so, he decides to follow his sister’s steps and leave the house.
Before the age of 4 years old Malcolm’s fathers views and beliefs caused them to relocate twice which caused Malcolm difficulty regarding school as he had to join multiple of different schools. At the age of 6 Malcolm’s father was killed by a street car and this caused emotional distress on both Malcolm and his siblings and had a greater impact on his mother as soon after his death she was committed to a mental institution which placed Malcolm in a juvenile home. Later on Malcolm had told his teacher that he wanted to be a lawyer and then was told that he should consider being a carpenter because of his race at this time Malcolm’s intellectual ability was challenged. He later enrolled at Mason High School in and lived in various care homes which made is more difficult for him to study as he was constantly moving. Malcolm decided to live in Boston with his half-sister and began to notice her strong and independent character.
Malcom X did not have the same lifestyle that Martin had the ability to grow up with. As a child he watched his house get burned down by the Klu Klux Klan which filled him with anger and hate towards white people. His father was killed by white supremacists and his mom, in shock from the murder, had to be put into a mental institution which left Malcom living with all family friends. He went to school but felt like the school pet because he was the only black student. He dropped out of school and later started doing drugs which landed him
But then everyone sees the woman's husband. They find he has committed suicide because he couldn't take his wife's screaming. Dr. Adams tells Uncle George to take Nick out of the hut. The doc feels bad that he brought his young son and his son had to see the bloody pregnancy and the guy's suicide. On the way back, Nick is curious and asks a lot of questions about the childbirth and the suicide.
