Chapter 3 Case Study Discussion: Lois Quam 1. How does Lois Quam use emotions and moods in her speeches to convey her viewpoint? Cite examples to support your statements. First, let’s define emotions and moods. Emotions are strong positive or negative feelings directed toward someone or something. Often, they have a short-term duration and are associated with something. There are six types of emotions: anger, joy, fear, love, sadness and surprise. Also emotions are divided as self-conscious (internal sources) and social (external sources). Moods are more generalized positive and negative feelings or states of mind that may persist for some time. In the case study about Quam, we can see how she projects such emotions and moods in a positive way. In one of her speeches she said: “I am optimist about our future” which portrait her positively feelings along her believe in green economy. Also, she portrait joy and love for her new job. “I enjoyed sharing… how we can all use these key capabilities as a platform for doing something you love”. This is a clear example to demonstrate the passion, joy and love she has in combating climate change and conserve biodiversity. Also, make the audience part of her feelings: “Imagine: helping to build the New Green Economy (NGE) with a purposeful passion”. In contrast, Affective Events Theory states that emotions and moods are influenced by events involving other people and situations. In this case, we can see that Lois Quam is influenced by the trip she made to Norway that captures her attention on global climate change. This situation convoked her to quit her job of an international investment bank and become CEO of Tysar, a green economy and health care incubator company.
