In life we will always have conflicts, at home, at work and even at school. You can let one of two things happen; you can let the conflict become bigger than it really is or try to meet on common ground. I will always choose to work things out, regardless if I’m wrong or right. Doing this will not only help me with my conflict managements skills, but they will also improve my interpersonal skills and my ability to be open minded. In our world today, customer service is top priority, so if I’m able to enhance my ability to solve conflicts, than I can possibly conquer any conflict that comes my
My sophomore year I got into a club called “DECA”, which stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. It is a marketing club for student who are interested in the business field. As that year went through I thought to myself that opening up a beauty salon would be a good idea. Thinking about opening my own business one day was one of my choices but I still wasn’t sure on what I really wanted to do after I graduated from high school. As the years went by, I got serious about the program.
Striving for the American Dream For hundreds of years, people from foreign countries have been immigrating to the United States in pursuit of one common goal—to achieve the American dream. The novel, Typical American, by Gish Jen explores this same journey of a Chinese man named Ralph Chang, his sister Theresa, and his wife Helen as they experience life in America. Ralph’s original intention of immigrating to America was to earn his college degree, but as we find as the novel progresses, he becomes influenced by other people, which causes his dreams to be altered. Through reading this book, I have come to realize that while our dreams might change, we are always striving toward accomplishing something great. In the beginning of the novel, we find Ralph on his journey to the United States with the aspiration in mind to earn his PhD.
Within the last few decades or so, a new movement has taken root in the running world: barefoot running. Amongst the hordes of runners embracing “the latest stabilized, cushioned and customized shoe technology, barefooters have been quiet contenders in the running world for many years.” (Saremi, “Barefoot Running”). The trend was already in existence long before Christopher McDougall brought it into the public mind with his best-selling book, Born to Run (Knopf, 2009). The author writes about a tribe in Mexico called the Tarahumaras who are distance runners covering several miles a day with either barely shod feet or nothing at all on them. Are they some of the best runners in the world today?
Consequently, for a hero to be completely successful, they must experience the return to be at peace with their journey. Without each step of the journey, the hero would lack experience and miss important lessons learned along the way of the journey. The separation and departure stage of a hero’s journey is imperative, because it starts the journey and gives the hero confidence for the most difficult trials to come. The first stage of the journey, the call, is crucial to the overall success of the hero because it sets the journey in motion. In the case of Room, the main character Jack turns five years old, and his mother knows this is the time for them to escape the treacherous Old Nick and the claustrophobia of the eleven by eleven foot room.
There are some many life obstacles but in the end if you set goals and stick to them you have a better chance at receiving the outcome you want for your future. Growing up I talked about doing and becoming things that are “unrealistic” like becoming a princess, the world’s biggest pop-star, marrying Usher or LL Cool J. Now looking back I see that those were all silly dreams but it’s more than what I have now. Throughout high school I had a plan of exactly what I wanted to do. The timeline was set, all I had to was take action.
Like Diane I too have experienced many hardships as a young professional while trying to figure out what career path I should choose. After obtaining a Bachelor of Liberal Arts Degree. I always knew I wanted to continue my education in a graduate level program, but I was unsure where to focus my concentration. As a “feeler” in life I have searched for that perfect career yet after so many disappointing work experiences and external family crises I lost focus and a bit of hope in where that opportunity would lie. As one can see, my personal integrity and values have definitely played an important role in my life and professional career.
The loneliness of the Long Distance Runner This play was staged by Pilot Theatre Company and was performed on the 17th October 2012 at ‘The New Wolsey Theatre,’ in Ipswich. The play is based on a long distance runner in real time written by Alan Sillitoe in 1959.The play focuses on Colin, a teenager who we follow, alone with his thoughts, becoming part of his journey and his steady running rhythm which transports him over a harsh, frost bitten earth. Colin turns to long distance running as both an emotional and physical escape from his situation. Throughout the production the play employs ‘Cross-cutting’ to explain Colin’s story; it is set in real time so that all the flashbacks occur as he runs the race. The ambiguous flashbacks visualise the importance of having family and friends as Colin is caught up in long lost memories as a young offender in Borstal.
With saying that, I know that if I try hard and work hard, I will reach success. I must know that along with success comes failure. When failure happens I must not let it get in the way of my goals, I must develop ways I can fix my failure and keep moving. I also must learn the traits of a successful person, see the parts of my life that need improvement, and then move toward more success in my own life. Taking control of my choices and not being a victim of the change life is going to throw at me is another role that is important on my way to success.
