Identity and belonging “Belonging comes at a cost” Different environments and the atmosphere contribute to our sense of belonging. Belonging is a very important aspect in our lives. Without belonging, we would feel isolated and depressed. Our sense of and belonging is impacted by various factors, including our experiences, relationships, and our environment. Not only do we receive acceptance into a group but also having a feel of a sense of belonging. In order for us to all belong, there is a cost for us to pay. Everyone chooses different pathways in their lives. Some may lose the connection with their family or friends. However some do not know who their parents are so they go on a journey to find out what their identity is. Belonging comes at a major cost for many people as they want to be able to feel acceptance and belong in a group no matter what the costs are. As children grow up, it is natural for kids to want to belong into a group of people. They want to feel acceptance into the society even if it means they have to pay a cost. It may result to wanting to change their identity. The story in Growing up Asian in Australia called ‘sticks and stones’ is an example when someone wants to change their identity in order to belong to a group. Sunil is different and he feels isolated at school. The story compared himself differently to everyone else. He wanted to pay the cost of giving up his culture in order for him to feel a sense of belonging. Sunil got bullied at school everyday because he was a ‘darkie’. He wished ‘he was somewhere else, wish he were someone else.’ He thought that if he wasn’t black, people would like him and stop picking on him al the time. “Naturally growing up, I didn’t want to be a nigger… I just wanted to fit in.” there was one time when sunil tried to wash off his black skin when he got told it could be possible.
