Barry Sanders vs. Walter Payton Running back is the most glory filled position on the football field. They touch the ball or have a big part in every play blocking, faking, or route running. Playing this position isn't easy. It takes speed, strength, size, mental toughness, and knowledge of the game. There are many great running backs that displayed all these qualities. Barry Sanders and Walter Payton both are legendary running backs in the National Football League. In spite of Walter Payton's popularity, Barry Sanders is the better football hero. Born July 16, 1968 in Wichita, Kansas Barry Sanders didn't become a star until later in his life. When he was in high school he didn't even play running back until the fourth game of his senior year. He rushed for over 1,300 yards in the last seven games he played in high school and earned all-state honors. Only receiving a handful of scholarships, one from Oklahoma State University. That is the college he attended from 1986-1989. Sanders didn't start here either. He waited patiently behind Thomas Thurman, future Hall of Famer. It wasn’t until his junior year that he started running back. Barry dominated breaking NCAA records in rushing and touchdowns. He rushed for a total of 2,628 yards in one season and crossed the line of the end zone 39 times(Nightingale, Dave). With 37 rushing touchdowns and two receiving. Before he became a start at Oklahoma State University he was a little well known punt and kick returner. After his stellar junior year in 1988 he was awarded the Heisman Trophy. Sanders was very humble when receiving the great award(Nightingale, Dave). On the field Barry always played with composure and let his actions speak for themselves. In his college years he also ran for over 200 yards a game and had four games of over 300 yards. Averaging over 7.5 yards a carry he was selected by the Detroit
