Struggles of a Cholo People are not all equal; as much as Americans claim to have equal rights we do not. While some have a life filled of money, love, health, happiness, some people are poor, depressed, neglected due to poverty, abused and in general are considered just a nobody. Luis Rodriguez faced many obstacles in his life. In the novel Always Running, Rodriguez faces discrimination, poverty, gangs, abuse, drugs, lost, and disrespect. His life is filled with trouble. After living this horrific type of life Rodriguez overcomes this obstacles and changes his life for the better. He luckily has the opportunity to live and tell his journey. The first obstacle that Rodriguez faces starts when he is very young. He is just entering school and he faces discrimination because of color and race. At school he is teased because he does not know the English language he feels really terrible that no matter how much he tries “Americans” will not accept him. A woman yells at Rodriguez and his mother saying, “Look spic, you can’t sit there!” You don’t belong here! Understand? This is not your country!” (Page 19) Rodriguez feels upset and mistreated. This give him the idea that no matter what he does he will always be looked down upon. This gives him the reason to be bad and to do exactly what “Americans” think Mexican or Hispanic do; trouble. Another obstacle he faces is looking for love and protection from his family. However, none of that is given to him. He comes from a poor family and their worries are surviving while Rodriguez just wants some comfort, caring parents. Although his parents try it was not enough to keep him out of trouble. This quote shows how his parents had hope. “ Esta bien,” Dad says as he nears my mother. “We will make it Mujer. I know it. But we have to be patient. We have to believe.” (Page 34) Rodriguez just needs a little bit more love and
