Whereas in America we have one last name and when a woman gets married it changes to her husband’s last name. La Siesta. In the early hours of the afternoon, when the intense heat of the sun discourages physical activity, people take a rest period, la siesta. Business people shut their doors at about one o'clock and go home to eat lunch with their families. Lunch is the biggest meal of the day and a time for the family to gather together.

Dumas stated, “Displaying the hospitality that Iranians so cherish, my father extended a dinner invitation to everyone who called”(321). “As a result, we found ourselves feeding dozens of people every weekend”(Dumas 321). Her mom intended dinner starting on Monday for the next weekend. Since she didn’t drive, her husband took her shopping every Tuesday for all the provisions she needed for the dinner. Availability and freshness of food and herbs determined how long the shopping trip would be.

Unlike New York’s dance halls, the time for dance for women in Middletown was if there was a celebration or a friend was having a chaperoned dance. It working class New York most women worked exhausting hours in order to bring their parents their pay envelopes at the end of the week unopened. There was very little money for the working class women in New York. Family leisure time in New York was spent on Sundays walking to church in their best outfits and then going to the park for a picnic while the fathers read the Sunday newspaper. Raymond’s Conviction As I woke up to the sun shining in my face on a beautiful Friday, I was ready to enjoy the wonderful summer weather that North Charleston had to offer. My daily routine consisted of taking a shower, lunch, and playing outside. Mama worked twelve hour shifts so she had already left for work at about 6:15 a.m. I was always in the house alone, but never once felt neglected or took advantage of my twelve hours of freedom. All of my siblings were older than me and moved out of mama’s house so I almost felt like an only child.
