The role of performance management in today’s workplace is an essential contributing factor to the organizations success. The fundamental concept behind performance management is to ensure that the organization and all of its parts are working together in an optimum fashion to achieve the objectives set forth by the organization. Performance management according to Kreinter & Kinicki, is an “organization wide system whereby management integrates the activities of goal setting, monitoring and evaluating, providing feedback and coaching, and rewarding employees on a continuous basis” (2013, p.238). When effectively implemented, performance management can create a wide range of benefits for not only the organization but for its employees as well. Julia A Stewart’s management style depicted in the action case study exemplified the three main aspects of the performance improvement cycle. In the case study, Stewart commented on her trips to several restaurants where employees wouldn’t normally receive recognition. Stewart provided feedback and coaching when she acknowledged employees who did the walk-in. She praised them for their job well done and then gathered other employees around to see what had gone right and what could be done even better the next time. Stewart displayed positive reinforcement to employees through her use of compliments such as “great job” for portioning the right amount of food as well as complimenting employees who were responsible for the walk-in. Goal setting wasn’t as evident as the other two components of the performance management cycle but Stewart comments on the importance of encouraging employees to learn which in turn leads them to become more enthusiastic about their work. This suggests an emphasis on a learning goal orientation where employees concentrate their efforts to develop the ability to accomplish future tasks. Given
