NUR Effective Leadership and Management in Nursing NUR 492 October 1, 2012 Effective Leadership and Management in Nursing Effective leadership and management are an essential part of any health care facility. Portraying excellence in this part of health care is necessary to deliver quality care to patients. The core to any facility is nursing and acquiring the best leadership and management is the key to any facility. Therefore, behavior, involvement, demeanor, and discipline of a healthcare facility start with their leadership, which develops the commitment and drive for this facility. This paper will explain the difference between leadership and management, explain characteristics of an effective leader, and last illustrate views of leadership. The term leadership and management are assuming to be the same. However, there are noticeable differences between the two. Leaders guide their employees to success and maintain an open communication within their unit. Leaders seem to instill a sense of significance in the workforce by giving employees the power of their vision and values (Kilbort, 2004). The leader is important in forging links—creating connections—among an organization’s members to promote high levels of performance and quality outcomes (Sullivan, Decker, 2009). Management is going by protocols, procedures, and systems. A manager, in contrast, is an individual employed by an organization who is responsible and accountable for efficiently accomplishing the goals of the organization (2009). Working as a leader in the healthcare profession requires a large amount of responsibility, which takes much work, and is not effortless.
