The 250 years between 475 and 221 BC is called the Warring States Period because the region was divided among 8 states in a war against each other. Silk Road- Historical network of interlinking trade routes across the Afro-Eurasian landmass that connected East, South, and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world, as well as parts of North and East Africa. Legalism- The principles and practices of a school of political theorists advocating strict legal control over all activities, a system of rewards and punishments uniform for all classes, and an absolute monarchy. Confucianism- System of ethics, education, and statesmanship taught by Confucius and his disciples, stressing love for humanity, ancestor worship, reverence for parents, and harmony in thought and conduct. Daoism- philosophical system developed by Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu advocating a simple honest life and noninterference with the course of natural events. Yin and Yang- two principles, one negative, dark, and feminine (yin), and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang), whose interaction influences the destinies of creatures and things. Mencius- Chinese philosopher, who introduced the ethical system of Confucius. Shi Huangdi- The first Chinese Emperor, he ruled from 221 BC until 210 BC when he died. Great Wall- A system of walls with a roadway along the top, constructed as a defense against the nomads of the Mongolian and Manchurian regions.
