Women in Hinduism In Hinduism there are many aspects one has to consider that differ from other religions: for example what role women play and how they are portrayed. Furthermore, in Hindu religion there are many traditions that have not changed over time, thus, many restrictions still exist among women. Though, there may have been some changes over time due to modernity and technology, Hindu women have yet to gain a proper place in their society and are still not on par with women from different societies. Hindu women have been portrayed in Hindu literature throughout their history as people of high stature to being of the lowliest status people around (Narayan, 2005). Hindu women from higher castes are expected to have more restrictions and expectations placed upon them. They are expected to fulfill their obligations dutifully and morally that is expected of them from belonging to a higher caste. Lower caste Hindu women do not have many restrictions and expectations compared to higher caste women because being in a lower caste they are considered untouchables. By religious and social standpoint, lower castes Hindus are considered polluted and are treated as outsiders to Hindu society. From the beginning of a Hindu woman’s life, she is under the control of male dominance. She will be under the care of her father, upon marriage she will be serving her husband, and when her husband dies she will be taken care of by her son(s). Hindu parents are eager to marry off their daughters so they can be released from the burden of having a daughter. In rural villages in India, this is often the case it will has resulted in child marriages. Hindu women have been both empowered and subjugated by religious tradition over the centuries (Narayan, 2005).
