Writing Prompt Historians classify Sumer as a civilization for many reasons. They had a stable food supply, religion, and arts. All of these things make up a civilization. They also had technology, a social structure, a government and writing. First, a society could only exist if there was a stable food supply. Early Sumerians had plenty of food to eat. They were able to get food by turning the soil so it is prepared for planting. When they did this it made the process of planting the food faster. Sumerians took care of their plants by watering them regularly. They also used irrigation systems like reservoirs, canals, and dams. Second, Sumerians had a lot of religion. Religion influenced every part of daily life in Sumer. Sumerian kings built many towers to please and worship their gods. The towers were made of brick plat forms with shrines at the top. A Ziggurat was an ancient Mesopotamian tower with staircases outside and a shrine at the top.…show more content…
These arts included painting, architecture, and music. Metalworkers made many things like weapons, mirrors, and jewelry. Architects designed things like temples and ziggurats. Music was also a big thing and brought joy to the gods and people. Things like the wheel and the plow made life in Sumer very different. Lastly, technology was very advanced in Sumer. The technology in Sumer included the wheel and the arch. The wheel helped farmers move goods more easily. Sumerians also used the wheel to shape clay into pots. The arch was used to add beauty and strength to buildings. Sumerians also had a social structure, government and writing. Without all of these things you can’t have a civilization.
