Luis’ student-teaching experience came as a realization to him not only in a positive way but in a negative way as well. Now that he finished his degree and credential work he least expected to be presented with a full-time teaching position in his hometown starting at $29,000 a year. As he least expected to allow his friend to talk him into a management trainee position at Sunset National it was another surprise to find that the large bank chose him 15 other candidates. This opportunity would give him a slightly better pay starting at $38,000 a year. In addition to his pay at the bank when he’s promoted to loan officer he would be receiving an additional $3,000 raise.

Assignment 1 – Competitive Analysis of the Grocery Industry Rebecca Lenz Alice Richmond BUS 490 – Business Policy October 27, 2011 Competitive Analysis of the Grocery Industry Porters Five-Forces Model of competitive analysis is a widely used approach for developing strategies in many industries (David, 2009). Everyday millions of Americans and citizens of other countries nourish their bodies with food that is purchased at one store or another. By using Porters Five-Forces Model, a clear and concise competitive analysis can be done for an industry that is sure to be around forever. The grocery industry consists of many different competitors like Publix, Winn Dixie, Wal-Mart, Costco, and BJ’s just to name a few. When a consumer sets out to fill their cabinets with their everyday necessities the owner and operator of these grocery stores needs to take into consideration the wants, needs and desires of their shoppers, how to pull them in and how to keep them.
His wait staff average salary was not very high (he would not give me any specific numbers), but they made most of their money off tips. Staff members are supposed to report their tip income so that they can pay the correct taxes. However, most wait staff employees only reported tips on meals paid by credit card and maybe a minor percentage of the cash tips. With the remaining cash tips, they did not report any income. When I asked John if he knew whether this was happening or if you just suspected it, he said that he knew and did not stop his wait staff from doing it.

My dad has no college experience but he is successful in what he does, he is an engineer at a rubber factory. The “selling” section of Enrenreich’s book was really the turning point of the book for me. The first two sections focused on jobs that I really could not relate to, as they were random businesses in areas of the United States I have never visited. When Barbara decided to take a job at Wal-‐Mart, America’s largest private employer, I was finally able to relate to her struggles because I am very familiar with the company. After reading about the struggles both Ehrenreich and her close co-‐workers faced, I am very supportive of her decision to leave Wal-‐Mart in hopes of securing a higher income job elsewhere. The company seems to really know and understand the situation their employees are in and they definitely use that to the advantage
According to the author, “education is important, but a college education is not the only path to success,” (Mather 20). I agree with Mather that in our society a formal college education is one path to success, but there are many other alternative paths that can lead to success as well. I am one hundred percent certain that as of today there is no law that says everyone has to finish school and go to college to be successful. My father did not go to college and yet he is still the chairman of a big copper wires company. He went straight to the labor force at the age of fifteen because my family had lost everything after the Fall of Saigon.
Fortunately I changed my mind and went back to school to finish the university. I studied Business Administration and I majored in Hotels Administration. After four years I completed the university and got my degree. One year before I
