The advent of TV has changed our lives forever. We truly have become obsessed with our television sets such as large screen, flat screen LCD, plasma, you name it and we have it. However, do we really know whether watching TV is beneficial? We are still debating the advantages of watching TV. Although most people think that watching TV is a waste of time, I strongly believe that watching TV has more advantages than disadvantages because TV is a source of information and it is a source of entertainment. Firstly, television is, in comparison with other media, a readily accessible source of information. Without incurring any monthly subscription charges, viewers are able to enjoy the use of a large number of television channels. Besides, as compared to retrieving information from the Internet, viewers do not have to be technologically sophisticated or savvy to obtain information from television. Furthermore, the various free channels offer a plethora of programmes. An example is the news bulletin which captures events as they occur all over the globe and transports viewers mentally to the scenes of those events, enabling them to keep abreast with current issues. Finally, television programmes provide undoubtedly useful information on a wide range of subjects such as cookery, fashion, health, religion, sports and so on and so forth. Thus, television reigns supreme as a disseminator of information. Another reason why watching TV has more advantages than disadvantages is because TV is a source of entertainment. In our lives, we need some entertainment. Watching TV is one of the ways for us to relax after work or study. TV is also a good cure during hard times because it can divert our minds from things that we are trying to get out of our minds. We can enjoy and laugh watching some programmes like America’s Funniest Home Videos and Malaysia’s Raja Lawak and so on.
