Did he really need your attention? Was it worth being yelled at by your coach? Was it worth it worth it throwing away your dreams and hard work down the drain? To me the answer is a big fat no. It wouldn’t have taken any absence of conscience to run right by him, and he wouldn’t have lost any sleep over it.
It creates a happiness and builds something to work towards. However, some parents chase after goals in which they just are not suited for. For instance, in “Death Of A Salesman“, Willy, the father of Biff and Happy, creates a false sense of a positive outlook on searching for a career and what it takes by saying that, “The man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead.” (Miller Line 625-627). In fact, these ideas are the exact opposite of what it takes to be successful in the business world. Willy thinks that if he were to tell the truth to his kids, they wouldn’t respect him for not being as successful as he claims to be.
They argue that the position that children occupy in society is not fixed, but differs between times, places and cultures. Childhood is not fixed but socially constructed, we know this as there are many laws out there which have been put there to construct the way childhood should be. It is generally accepted in our society today that childhood is a very special time of life, and that children are fundamentally different from adults. Sociologist such as Jane Pilcher sees it that children have a certain lack of skills, knowledge and experience and need a long time before they mature into adults and are responsible to understand the responsibilities that come with adulthood. As Jane Pilcher (1995) believes the most important feature of the modern idea of childhood is separateness.
In order to accept a life of obedience, drudgery, and fear, the people of Equality 7-2521’s society follow ideas of Collectivism, Altruism, and Conformity which eliminate the thought of opposition to the leaders, also known as the World Council. Collectivism creates a tie between man and a group of people comparable to Anthem. Altruism creates a feeling opposite of individualism also similar to Anthem, where the people do not have their own thoughts or even have the knowledge of whether they could ever choose Transgression of Preference. Conformity is one of the key aspects of life in Equality’s society which the members of the World Council depend on and one reason why the people do not oppose anything they say. As a result, the people of Anthem’s society live a life whose purpose is not for them individually or for their own self-interest, but for the sake of the World Council and their “brothers.” Instead of living by one’s own mind, society as a whole in Anthem follows a strict policy of Collectivism for the sake of “the common good.” In addition to forcing occupations on the people, the World Council keeps a strong hold of everyone’s daily schedule so that their future plans can not be affected in any way.
The hidden curriculum has a big influence on pupils, its one thing to teach the child educationally but if the child is treated unjustly (no voice) by the school system then a much more negative message is given to those pupils about the nature of society. According to Functionalists, meritocracy exists in all of society. Parson (1961) believes in the wider society everyone is treated the same and that your position is determined by your effort and your will to achieve. So society is said to be meritocratic, as everybody can achieve if they want to. Durkheim (2002) Believes that there are fixed rules for all and by transmitting the norms and values across society, it is then fair and meritocratic.
That only happens when you start losing stuff” (D’Amato: Any Given Sunday). D’Amato is using memories in his argument to demonstrate the idea that losers do not have enough passion or motivation to win a game. To state more simply, if you always have no self-confidence to win, you will lose in parts of your life. By using this memory his pathos helps his players feel the way he does. As a player you do not want to feel so low.
Haila Jones To Spank or not to Spank As parents we use discipline to teach our children the difference between the right thing and the wrong thing to do. It is the parent’s choice what type they would like to use. There are several, different types of parental styles starting with: authoritarian , overly permissive , authoritative, and spanking (corporal punishment). There are different parenting styles depending on your culture as well. I believe that there is no right or wrong way to discipline a child, but there is a right and wrong way to behave.
T.S. Elliot once wrote “It is in fact a part of the function of education to help us escape, not from our own time -- for we are bound by that -- but from the intellectual and emotional limitations of our time” (Infinity Web Development, LLC, 2002-2010). The Americans should bring back the perception that “there is nothing we can’t be" stems from our ancestral heritage. Since the majority of the early settlers could not read or write, they worked hard to make sure the kids of the future all had a chance to learn. They believed they had a responsibility to improve themselves, to be the best they could be, to improve their abilities, and to help thy neighbors.
Does that make me a loser or a winner that I had faith that what I did what I could do? There will always be someone better than you, even if you do your best. There will always be someone worse than you. The competition will never end and the faith you have in yourself will help you overcome any obstacle. But the faith someone has to overcome all of the usual abilities it takes to be a competitive football player never comes into play, as it may be just a personal inclination.
Orwell says that these motives exist in different degrees in all writers. According to Orwell people will react best when all four motives are present and he also said that he was somewhat forced into becoming a pamphleteer because he was unaware of his political loyalties. From reading his essay I gathered that descriptive writing could be written without all four motives but other than that the writing cannot be whole unless all four motives are displayed. Similar to Orwell’s view on the political motive for writing Linda Hogan believes that writing comes from the community and goes back to the community. Hogan believes that writing should be used to ask and answer the deepest of all questions, both internal and external.
