Course Reference: Chapter 3, Making Sense of Feelings at Work Introduction What is work? Work can be defined in many different ways. Most commonly viewed as the services we are monetarily compensated for, work as referenced by Desjardins, J. (2009). Business Ethics (3RD ed.). can be viewed simply as a means to an end. With that being said, what are “the ends”? Identifying what the “end” is can offer explanation or meaning to “why” we work. “Feelings” about work is relevant to why and how we work. “Our actions at work are driven as much by feelings as they are by rational calculations…” (Pearce, 2009) Organizational Behavior. These jobs that in many cases are looked upon as being menial can cause those who hold them to maintain low self-images of themselves and have negative feelings towards the work. Others who hold position titles that are held in higher regards, likely maintain an elevated feeling of self entitlement and worth because the work they do is valued greater either monetarily or socially. Meaning and value of work can also be shaped by the businesses that provide work through opportunities for employment. In further noting values placed on jobs such as trash collection, the environment and conditions in which the work is performed can determine how a person views their work. Attitudes can be driven by an employer’s efforts or lacks thereof in making a job seem meaningful. “Provided the job is hard labor, the hours are long, and the wages aren’t what I’d like them to be, I know my employer cares for my well being and values my efforts by providing a safe, comfortable environment and incentive to work harder.
