Can you go for upward delegation? Explain how? From your experience what are key precautions and strategies the delegator can use to discourage upward delegation. Explain using common place explanation or examples. In a simple language, we can conclude the delegation as an art of giving tasks to sub-ordinates with authority and making them responsible. But, always delegation can't go downward. There is the place for upward delegation too in a practical situation. It may be in many forms. When a manager asks his/her staff to do a task and staff replies that I do not have knowledge to do it. Here, his/her staff is returning that task to the manager and indirectly saying- do it yourself. Let's see an another example: If a manager thinks that my sub-ordinate staff may take it 2 days to complete but I have only 1 day to do it, so I do it myself. This is also an upward delegation. Manager is afraid of delegating the job, just due to the fear of timing and postpone his/her already planned job to do that job. We can't see the upward delegation existed clearly. The environment creates in such a way that it happens. Actually, delegator don't want to happen it. Delegator always wants to make oneself free and engage in creative planning and managerial work. For this, the person who delegates the job want to discourage upward delegation. In our workplace, we can see the managers try to prevent themselves from being the victim of upward delegation. -Making the sub-ordinates understood their responsibilities. Sometimes, if the sub-ordinate staffs do not understand their duties and responsibilities, they return the task given to them to the delegator. The delegator should try to teach their duties clearly. -Giving training and instructions about the procedures. Sometimes, junior staff may not have enough knowledge to handle the given task.
