1. Give two reasons why clear and effective information between partners is important. Communicating together involves a two-way sharing of information and helps to develop a common understanding, meaning it is easier for parents, carers and staff to support one another. When families and staff share information, everyone can be aware of children’s strengths and challenges and can work together to support children’s social and emotional wellbeing. Effective communication also helps families and staff to build a trusting partnership and develop honest and respectful relationships.
1.2 Relationship building is important when working with children and young people. The way this is done is by being a positive role model. The young person must feel comfortable when I am helping/supporting the young person with work. When working with children I have to make sure that when working with then that I use easy to understand words. Towards children I must show a caring approach and listen to them when they are asking me question and make eye contact so they know that I am listening to them.
Unit 8: Promote Communication in Health, Social or Children’s and Young People’s Settings Task 1: Understand why effective communication is important in the work setting 1. (1.1) There are numerous reasons for people to communicate and these include: • Establishing a relationship • Maintaining a relationship • Small talk • Giving and receiving information and instructions • Giving and receiving acknowledgment, reassurance, encouragement and support • Expressing needs and feelings • Expressing and negotiating ideas, thoughts, opinions and concerns • Asking questions 2. (1.2) Positive working relationships with adults lead to a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere in the working environment. This is beneficial not only to the adults, but also to the children/young people, because the Foster Carer’s working environment is the child’s home, play and learning space. When positive relationships are formed, it is easier for colleagues and parents to give and receive trust, information, support, help, advice and encouragement.
Unit 5: Develop Positive Relationship with Children, Young People and Others Involved in Their Care. 1. Be able to develop positive relationships with children and young people. 1.1 Explain why positive relationships with children and young people and how these are built and maintained Positive relationship with children and young people is important because they help children to develop their independence, self esteem and wellbeing. A child will always play and learn better when they are comfortable in their surroundings.
1.2 There are various factors which contribute to the development of positive relationships; these principles of relationship building can be divided into categories, the key ones being the need for effective and clear communication with any human being. The basic aim is to make one feel comfortable and secure in our company. Body language, facial expressions and gestures are also crucially important in effective communication. we must show respect and courtesy, from the simple ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to listening to peoples points of views by using warm tones of voice especially with children and young adults, courtesy and respect provide a good foundation to agreeable relationships. 1.3 Effective communication is not just about speaking and listening.
Unit 5 Develop Positive Relationship with Children, Young People and Others involved in their care. 1.1 These are important because in my role as Registered Care Worker my job is to promote the well being and safety of the children/young people in my care, to provide good care and to support and assist them by endeavouring to provide learning opportunities and leisure activities. I also try to build good relationships and provide continued care to promote the above at all times. Young people need to have strong relationships with the staff to feel comfortable and secure to promote a healthy happy wellbeing and they are less likely to show unwanted behaviour. From staff point of view a close relationship means I can learn to recognise the young persons needs and I am better able to meet these needs.
1.1 Explain why positive relationships with children and young people are important and how these are built and maintained. When working with children and young people it is important for them to feel relaxed within the environment and the people they come in to contact with; this promotes a child’s ability and enables positive development. We are required within our job to build relationships rather quickly while maintaining the professional boundaries. Children and young people who have a positive relationship with a practitioner are more likely to display positive behaviour, and have confidence enabling them to communicate successfully. When children who are in a nursery setting feel comfortable with staff it becomes easier for them to separate with their parents and engage in activities and play.
To maintain a positive relationship with children, there is a need for the child to understand that you will be there for them to listen to and work through any problems in a calm and relaxed manner. To spend time with a child doing activities that they enjoy will give them a feeling of worth, that they are important and that their feelings and thoughts are valued. It is also important not to be critical or put down any person that might be important in a child’s life, no matter what the circumstances are. When building relationships with children it is vital that I find out what their likes and dislikes are, this could be something as simple as finding out what their favourite food is or putting their favourite cartoon on television for them to watch as it makes a child feel like you are listening to them for the small and not so important things in life and so in turn helps in the process of building trust and then a child can feel secure and confident that you will deal with other significant issues with the same attention.
Effective communication is required to form positive relationships in children and young people in different settings such as in a formal, informal or professional aspect. Each of these requires you to consider how you approach others and how you respond to them. By approaching and responding in a positive way to children and young people will help them to feel more comfortable in forming these relationships. It is also important for us to model the skills required to enter into positive relationships. In forming these relationships we must remember the importance of building trust, being understood and being able to express ourselves to others in imparting with the relevant information.
